Since I have some new followers, letā€™s talk perpetual care again!! Itā€™s been a while since Iā€™ve touched on this subject. Thereā€™s a lot of misconception that perpetual care means the cemetery cares for your family plot.

Perpetual Care is a trust fund that people pay a portion to when they buy a burial plot. The interest made in the trust, goes towards the maintenance and repairs of the cemetery grounds themselves. Things like maintaining the cemetery roads and paths, water supply, mowing of the lawn, fixing fences etc... It typically does not cover any maintenance, cleaning, or repairs for individual plots. The individual plots are almost always entirely left up to the family to clean, repair and maintain.

Why is cleaning and maintaining headstones so important? It helps preserve history. In my few years in doing cemetery photography and cemetery preservation, Iā€™ve seen stones that have been completely buried under the ground for years! Long before I was around. Iā€™ve seen stones covered in so much lichen and harmful growth that it permanently damaged the stone and you can no longer read whoā€™s buried there. This is why headstone cleaning and repairing is so important.

Iā€™ve been seeing a lot of comments lately, and some of them being on cemetery preservation pagesā€¦ People say ā€œuse bleach. Itā€™s faster and cheaperā€.. While bleach might get the stone clean immediately, there are ingredients that cause significant harm to old historic stones, especially marble.. If you use harmful chemicals on marble, the stone will slowly erode over time. The names and dates begin to fade away. The bleach will also stain the marble a yellowish color, that will never go away. PLEASE donā€™t use harmful chemicals on headstones just to get fast results. Fast doesnā€™t always mean better.
