As a chaplain who often finds himself in trauma bays and emergency departments, I don’t have to stretch my imagination very far to understand what Mary and Martha must have been feeling in this Sunday’s Gospel.

I have stood beside hospital beds where families whisper prayers through tears and quietly wonder why help did not come sooner. That is why Martha’s words to Jesus feel so familiar: “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” Yet even in her grief she adds, “But even now I know that whatever you ask of God, he will grant you.”

That tension between sorrow and faith lies at the heart of the story of Lazarus.

This week on the podcast, we reflect on this powerful Gospel and the moment when Jesus reveals something extraordinary in the face of death: “I am the resurrection and the life.”
