Students require more than just books to succeed in school, and this new in-house, school resource is designed to help teens in need build confidence both in and out of the classroom. The Leadership Walker County (LWC) Red Team is piloting a Secret Pantry at local schools. At these schools, students will have access to a pantry stocked with basic hygiene products such as deodorant and body wash. T
he LWC Red Team got the idea after becoming aware of students' growing needs across the county. Tina Aaron learned that students are approaching counselors and teachers to ask for basics like toothbrushes and toothpaste. Being a teenager is tough enough without having to worry about the issue of not having basic hygiene tools. If students ever wish to use the pantry, all they need to do is confide in a teacher, counselor, or administrator. They will then be taken by a staff member to the school’s pantry where they can shop in a private setting free from stigma. Each participating school has identified a discreet place for the pantry, away from the main flow of students. The Ag departments have worked on the construction of shelving units to store the items. Counselors and school administrators have agreed to monitor the pantries. Local citizens and churches are donating money for construction and products to stock the pantries. Area businesses have also been established as drop off points so that community at large can donate. The team has designed the pantries to have shelving and bins to stock the items and a usage/inventory form to make it easy to keep up with need for replenishment. Once firmly established, organizations within the schools will use the pantry in their fundraising and community service projects. The plan establishes the pantry first for hygiene products. Following the success of that project, we hope to expand the program to include other important staples like clothing, basic food items and school supplies.
