Thank you to LIFT JAX for featuring the history of our church.
This , we’re taking a look at the people and places that make OutEast so historically significant, such as the Mount Olive A.M.E. Church. First established in 1887, the current church building that still stands on Franklin St was built in 1922 and was designed by Richard Brown, Jacksonville’s first Black architect, who lived OutEast.
Important figures with ties to the church and community include:
➡️ Abraham Lincoln Lewis, an influential businessman and philanthropist who helped found Florida’s first Black insurance company and helped establish American Beach, a beach for African Americans during segregation. He became Florida’s first American millionaire.
➡️ A. Philip Randolph, the labor leader and civil rights activist who led the first successful African American labor union and helped end racial segregation in the Armed Forces. He also led the March on Washington, which is credited with helping to pass 1964's landmark Civil Rights Act that outlawed many forms of discrimination.
➡️ Joseph Edward Lee, a judge and federal official.
➡️ Dr. Johnetta Betsch Cole, an anthropologist and educator, best known as the first Black woman to serve as president of Spelman College and later as president of Bennett College. A living legend with deep roots in Jax, Dr. Cole remains an award-winning advocate for the rights of Black women in the U.S. and also served as national chair and 7th president for the National Council for Negro Women.
