We began the "Sermon on the Plain" with a discussion about hermeneutics - the science and art of how to study and interpret the Bible. It's important as we conclude this teaching to revisit the importance of context. The first step is observation, and this is where we get the context. We must read this text in context and remember this is a sermon that is flowing to a conclusion.
Context: Jesus has just warned against following the wrong leader. In that warning He used the analogy of the good tree baring good fruit. This sets us up for the point Jesus wanted to get across in this sermon. If Jesus is the tree, and we are His disciples, then how can we
claim allegiance (Lord, Lord) while refusing to obey.
Is Jesus expecting perfection? Short answer - yes, this is the goal. Perfection in what?
Job 34: 11 For He repays man according to his work and makes man to find a reward according to his way.
NOTE: There is a difference between "work" and "way". Work is the fruit and way is the root.
Take notes..

The Point of The Sermon VS 46 This is what the whole sermon is about.
You cannot claim allegiance ("Lord, Lord") while refusing obedience. This question exposes the contradiction between profession and practice, which the entire sermon has been building toward.

The Parable of the Wise and Foolish Builders VS 47 - 49 This parable is not about handling life's "storms", it's about living right in obedience to Christ as Lord.
Note: The context is an indication that this parable is in connection to Jesus's question about
professing allegiance to Him
* The one who hears and does His words builds on rock.
*The one who hears and does not do builds without a foundation.
This parable is the logical answer to the question in v. 46: Obedience is the only foundation for a life that can withstand judgment and suffering.
The only "way" to live this life right is to have a life built on the rock. Your life should reflect the teachings in the sermon.

As we continue with Jesus’s teaching in the sermon on the plain, we are struck with the reality of self-examination. Conviction sets in on our actions and motives. This is the intention of a sermon – to create a need in one to examine themselves and desire a change. Yet, this is much deeper than just that. Jesus is giving us the reason we are the way we are and the instructions for change. Who are you following? Been that way since Adam…
Context: Jesus is preaching a sermon and is walking a path about extraordinary love Christians must display. He’s now giving a warning about who you should follow. This passage flows contextually with verses 39 – 42…

Three connected images: Blind guides, Disciples and the teacher, Speck and the log
How do you choose a teacher?
Agricultural Proverbs – Another Analogy VS 43 - 44

The tree is the teacher. The fruit is the student. Cross reference the Sermon on the Mount:
Matt. 7:15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. (16) You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? (17) Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. (18) A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. (19) Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. (20) Therefore by their fruits you will
know them.
The Main Point – Become Good VS 45a - b
So how does one become good? One’s heart must be good… How does that happen?
The heart is not empty when one comes to Christ. It needs to be emptied of what’s been deposited – evil and replaced with good. How is this done?
Rom. 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
The Fruit Test – What You’re Saying VS 45c
Jesus is not only warning about whom you follow, but also about what kind of person you are becoming.
The logic is:
1. You become like your teacher (v. 40).
2. Therefore choose teachers with good fruit (vv. 43–45).
3. And make sure you are producing good fruit as well (v. 45).
So the passage is both:
A discernment warning (choose good teachers), and A self-examination call (become a good tree yourself).

Nonbelievers who don't read the Bible seem to be aware of one verse - Don't judge!! They use
that as a defense against evangelism or any criticism of their lifestyles. What's sad is that many
Christians use it on other Christians when confronted about sin. Not what Jesus meant....
CONTEXT: Still the sermon on the plain. This is still within the context of loving your enemy.
Don't make the mistake of separating it out from the overall framework of teaching.
The Directive on Judging VS 37 At first glance: Don't judge, don't condemn, and forgive.
Misunderstanding this to mean that we are not to judge or condemn anything and forgive
everything pertaining to someone's lifestyle. Should we judge? It's impossible not to.
John 72 Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment."
Jesus is not forbidding all forms of judgment. He is forbidding harsh, hypocritical, condemning judgment, not the necessary moral discernment believers must practice.
Judging and condemning are related. The opposite of both is to forgive.
The Analogy of The Market Place VS 38 One of the most misused Scriptures during offering.
Context: Giving love, blessing, and forgiveness to your enemy. This is not about giving money!
The Key: "with the same measure" - how you judge and either condemn or forgive will be
done to you the same way by God.
The Parable of the Blind Leading the Blind VS 39 Who is Jesus calling blind?
Mt. 15:4 Let them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind leads the blind, both
will fall into a ditch."
The blind are the religious leaders leading other blind people - those who believe they are
spiritually rich are spiritually blind. The Importance of Discipling VS 40 The importance of discipleship is wrapped up in the
relationship of the teacher to the disciple.
A Rhetorical Joke About Sitting in Judgment of Others VS 41 "speck" - in Jesus day was
like saw dust. To see a piece of saw dust in another's eye would require a lot sitting and staring.
Context: Jews knew this saying, Jesus used exaggeration to emphasize how ridiculous it is to
be a judgmental fault finder even of your enemy.
Point - don't be speck inspectors. Deal with your own issues first, when you've done that, then
get the specks out of your brother's eyes.
