Christ Is Supreme
Scripture: Colossians 1:15–23
Christ Is Above All (Colossians 1:15–20)
When we open Colossians 1:15–20, the Apostle Paul gives us one of the greatest, most jaw-dropping descriptions of Jesus in all of Scripture. Jesus wasn't simply a good teacher, a moral example, or another great prophet. He is God in the flesh. He is eternal, all-powerful, and worthy of our highest worship.
Paul reminds us that Jesus is:
- The visible image of the invisible God.
- Existing before anything was created (Prototokos — supreme in - rank and authority over all).
- Supreme over all creation.
- The One through whom everything was created.
- The One who holds all creation together — holding your physical universe and your daily life together by His power.
- The Head of the Church, which is His living body.
- The One in whom all the fullness (Pleroma) of God dwells.
- The One who made peace with God through His blood shed on the cross.
Think about that for a moment. The very same Jesus who spoke the stars into existence willingly gave His life for you on the cross. Through His substitutionary sacrifice, God built the bridge between a sinful humanity and a Holy Father. There was no other way, and Jesus became The Way.
Christ Has Reconciled Us (Colossians 1:21–22)
Paul takes this massive, heavenly message and brings it directly to our hearts:
- "You were once far away from God. You were His enemies, separated from Him by your evil thoughts and actions."
That describes every single one of us before Christ. We were utterly separated from God because of sin. Imagine standing as God’s enemy — no one can stand against the Almighty and win.
But then comes one of the greatest words in all of God's Word: "YET."
Yet now He has reconciled you to Himself through the physical death of Christ.
Because of Jesus:
- Your sins have been paid for in full.
- Your guilt has been completely forgiven.
- Your shame has been washed away.
- Your past no longer has the power to define your future.
Whether your struggle has been lust, po*******hy, addiction, pride, anger, fear, or any other sin, the blood of Jesus is sufficient. The cross is greater than your past!
Now, this doesn't mean temptation instantly disappears overnight. Sanctification is an ongoing, daily walk of yielding to God. But it does mean sin no longer rules over you. Through the miraculous, empowering Baptism in the Holy Spirit and His daily indwelling presence, you are no longer a slave to sin. You can walk in true, supernatural freedom!
Paul says that because of Christ, you stand before the Father:
- Holy.
- Blameless.
- Without a single fault.
Not because of your own works or self-effort, but because of what Jesus accomplished for you on the cross!
Continue to Stand Firm (Colossians 1:23)
Paul finishes this revelation with a crucial, Pentecostal charge: We must continue!
We must hold fast to the truth of the Full Gospel. We must stand firm on the solid rock of Jesus Christ, refusing to drift away from the blessed hope we have received.
Walking with God isn't just about a one-time decision made years ago at an altar. It is a daily, Spirit-led journey of following Jesus. When trials fire up, when temptation knocks, or when the enemy tries to plant seeds of doubt, don't drift. Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus!
- Remember the day He saved you.
- Remember the power of the cross.
- Remember the victory of the empty tomb!
- Remember that Jesus is still supreme over every storm, every trial, and every circumstance in your life today!
Application
When you surrendered your heart and made Jesus the absolute Lord of your life, you didn't just receive forgiveness — you became His Spirit-empowered ambassador to a broken world.
People ought to see the reality of Jesus in the way you live, love, forgive, serve, and walk in the supernatural power of the Holy Spirit every single day.
And when you stumble or struggle — as every believer does at times — don't run away from God. Run straight back to the altar! Run to Jesus! Re-anchor yourself in what He accomplished on Calvary. Receive His fresh forgiveness, rely on the Holy Spirit's daily power, and keep pressing forward.
The divine Creator who holds the universe together is the exact same Christ who is holding your life together right now.
Closing Challenge
If Jesus is truly supreme over all creation, is He truly supreme in your life today?
- Is He Lord over your daily thoughts?
- Is He Lord over your relationships and family?
- Is He Lord over your career and priorities?
- Is He Lord over your future and dreams?
Today, make the choice to stand firm in the Gospel. Don't compromise. Don't drift. Don't look back at what He saved you from. Keep your eyes locked on Jesus — our Creator, our Savior, our Healer, our Spirit-Baptizer, and our Soon-Coming King who has reconciled us to God forever!
