Members of the Kevin Barry Division #3 once again gathered at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery on the southside of Indianapolis to freshen up the “1st Irish of Indiana 35th Volunteer Infantry Memorial” and honor twelve identified gravesites of Civil War veterans who served in the 1st Irish of Indiana 35th Volunteer Infantry between 1861 and 1865.

Memorial Day is dedicated to mourning and honoring the brave military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Originally known as “Decoration Day,” the observance began following the American Civil War as communities gathered to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers and flags in remembrance of their sacrifice and service to our nation. That tradition continues today in cemeteries across America, including here in Indianapolis.

The Division began this important preservation and remembrance project in 2023 under the leadership of Division Historian Kevin Charles Murray. During this year’s visit, members cleaned the memorial area, replaced Irish flags, and cleaned the Grand Army of the Republic Veteran Medallions previously placed by our division at each gravesite in tribute to the Irish soldiers who served our nation during the Civil War.

The 35th Indiana Infantry Regiment, commonly known as the “1st Irish,” was organized in Indianapolis and officially mustered into Federal service on December 11, 1861. The regiment was largely made up of Irish-American immigrants and sons of Irish immigrants from throughout Indiana. Known for their distinctive emerald green caps and Irish battle flag bearing the motto “Be Just and Fear Not,” the regiment fought bravely in many major engagements of the Western Theater, including Stones River, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, the Atlanta Campaign, Franklin, and Nashville. The regiment served honorably throughout the Civil War before mustering out in October 1865.

The identified veterans and burial locations include Lt. Col. John Ralfe, Pvt. Patrick Walpole, Sgt. Joseph A. Shaler, Capt. John Maloney, Capt. John Cahill, Pvt. Michael Kelleher, Capt. Christopher O’Brien, Maj. Henery Conkrind, Capt. James McHugh, Pvt. Thomas Fox, Pvt. Samuel McGrossen, and Pvt. W. Morrart.

The Kevin Barry Division takes great pride in honoring those Irish men who came before us and who played such an important role in shaping both our country and the Indianapolis Irish community. Their courage, sacrifice, and dedication continue to inspire future generations of Hibernians.

Scecina Memorial High School awarded the Larry Neidlinger “We Care” Award, named in honor of the longtime teacher, coach, administrator, and friend of the school, to AOH, Kevin Barry Division #3 members Fr. James Farrell and Fr. Robert Gilday.

The award is presented annually to an individual(s) who exemplifies the spirit of “going the extra mile” in support of Scecina’s athletic program, much like Neidlinger himself.

Fr. Jim is a retired priest of the Indianapolis Archdiocese yet continues to serve as Scecina’s chaplain coordinator, inspiring students with his deep yet practical homilies and ongoing reflections on what ministry in a high school setting might look like.

Fr. Bob, who also retired from the Indianapolis Archdiocese, was an incredibly dedicated and insightful leader on Scecina’s Board of Directors. He maintained a consistent and cheerful presence at class, all-school, and football Masses, as well as on the varsity football sidelines on Friday nights.

Congratulations to our Hibernian Brothers!

The Kevin Barry Division mourns the loss of our Brother Patrick David Miles, 74, of Indianapolis. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family, on April 20, 2026. Born on August 10, 1951, in Indianapolis, Indiana, he was the eldest son of Patrick and Rose Miles.

Patrick grew up in St. Francis DeSales Parish in Brightwood and graduated from Cathedral High School in 1969. On June 19, 1971, he married the love of his life, Josephine Rizzi Miles, beginning a beautiful marriage that spanned 54 years.

Patrick’s strong work ethic began at an early age in his father’s grocery store, Pat’s Market. He continued in the grocery business for many years, including time at Jerry’s Market working as a butcher before pursuing a new path. He then completed his tool and die maker apprenticeship at Mitchum-Schafer, Inc. through Ivy Tech in 1981. He began his career at Mitchum-Schaefer, then moved to Eli Lilly, where he served for 37 years before retiring in 2017.

Retirement opened the door to one of Patrick’s greatest joys, serving others. He became a daily volunteer at St. Roch Catholic School, where he helped reset the cafeteria, open milk, and clean up after lunch. He became affectionately known as “Grandpa” to countless students, many of whom were convinced he was a real-life leprechaun.

A devoted man of faith, Patrick was an active member of Holy Name Parish. He served as Men’s Club President from 1981–1982 and remained deeply involved throughout his life, serving on the St. Vincent de Paul Committee and chairing the parish Summerfest for many years. In recognition of his service and dedication, he was named Holy Name Man of the Year in 2024.

Patrick was also a proud and active member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, an Irish Catholic organization devoted to faith, heritage, and charity. Joining in 1980, he served as president in 1987 and 1997. He also chaired the printed program for 25 years. His commitment was recognized with numerous honors, including Hibernian of the Year in 1986 and 2003, the President’s Award in 2005, and the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2025.

Above all, Patrick was a loving and devoted family man. He cherished his role as a husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. He took great pride in providing a Catholic education for his children, often saying the sacrifice was more than worth it. His grandchildren were the light of his life, and he supported them wholeheartedly in all their pursuits, from the stage to the athletic fields and courts.

Patrick will be remembered for his gentle spirit, kindness, humility, and quiet strength. He was soft-spoken, deeply caring, and loved by all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Patrick and Rose Miles; his brother, Dan Miles; and his sons, Thomas and Danny Miles.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Josephine Miles; his children, Patrick J. (Amy) Miles and Amy (Trevor) Wilson; and his seven grandchildren, Anna, Patrick Ian, Cooper, and Gavin Miles, and Xavier, Zoe, and Myles Wilson. He is also survived by his sisters, Sharon (Jim) Mandabach and Donna (Vince) Povinelli; his brothers, Chris (Madonna) Miles and Chuck (Cathy) Miles; and many cherished nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will gather on Thursday, April 23 from 4 to 8 p.m. in Holy Name Catholic Church, 89 N. 17th Ave., Beech Grove, Indiana. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, April 24 at 2 p.m. in the church with Rev. Bob Robeson presiding. Burial will follow in Holy Cross/St. Joseph Cemetery.

In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions have been suggested to Miracle Place. Envelopes will be provided at the church.

To share a favorite memory, sign the register book or order flowers, please visit www.LauckFuneralHome.com Arrangements and care are being provided by Lauck & Veldhof Funeral & Cremation Services.

Patrick’s life was a beautiful example of faith, service, and love. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
