In recent weeks, communities across the United States and around the world have faced an extraordinary succession of disasters.

Storms and floods. Wildfires. Earthquakes. And now, catastrophic flooding in Nepal.

Each disaster has its own story. Each represents lives lost or disrupted, families grieving, homes and livelihoods damaged, and communities beginning what may be a long journey toward recovery.

We hold the people of Nepal in prayer today.
Massive flash flooding has swept through communities in northern Nepal near the border with Tibet, washing away homes, roads, bridges, and critical infrastructure and threatening the livelihoods of communities along the river.

Information is still emerging, and access and communication remain difficult in some of the affected areas. We are grateful for local communities, government agencies, the Nepal Army, Red Cross, Scouts, and others who are already engaged in rescue and relief efforts.

Week of Compassion is in communication with our partners as ACT Alliance members in Nepal monitor the situation, assess the needs, and discern how best to respond.

God of mercy,
Be near to the people of Nepal in these frightening and uncertain hours.

Comfort those who grieve and those who are waiting for word of loved ones. Protect communities still in the path of the rising waters. Give strength and wisdom to first responders, local leaders, volunteers, and all who are working to rescue neighbors and reach communities that have been cut off.

For those who have lost homes, livelihoods, and the security of what was familiar, provide shelter, courage, and hope for the days ahead.

And as the waters recede and the long work of recovery begins, help us to stand faithfully with our partners and with the communities whose lives have been changed.

God, in your mercy, hear our prayers for Nepal.

Around our house, August means back to school.

The summer schedule disappears. Mornings start earlier. Backpacks are packed again. There are new teachers, new classes, new routines and, depending on the child, varying levels of enthusiasm about all of it.

It is all pretty ordinary. And maybe that is why I have been thinking about it differently this year.

A few weeks ago, I was reading a report from Community World Service Asia (CWSA), one of Week of Compassion's longtime partners. We have worked alongside CWSA for many years through earthquakes, floods, refugee response, and the slower work of helping communities rebuild their lives.

​One story stayed with me.

Her name is Ayaza. She is 11 years old and lives in Kumbhar Bhada, a remote village in Pakistan's Umerkot district.

We are holding the people of Indonesia in prayer following the powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck near Flores Island in East Nusa Tenggara.

Dozens of lives have already been lost, thousands of people have been displaced, and communities are facing damaged homes and infrastructure, landslides, and continuing aftershocks.

Week of Compassion is in communication with partners in Indonesia as they assess the impact and the needs of affected communities. As we learn more, we will share updates about how we can accompany and support our partners and communities responding on the ground.

In these first difficult hours, we pray for those who have lost loved ones, those who are injured or displaced, and the first responders and local communities working to reach those in need.

A powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake strikes off Indonesia's coast, killing at least 40 people and causing widespread panic.

On Monday, a powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia, trapping hundreds of people under debris, injuring many, and forcing many more to evacuate their homes. The epicenter of the earthquake was in San Jose Del Palmar, a city about 250 miles west of the capital of Bogotá. Early reports have already confirmed 20 casualties, with more expected in the coming days.

Week of Compassion is in communication with our partners on the ground who are monitoring the situation closely. We stand ready to accompany our partners and local communities and they respond to immediate needs and begin their long-tern recovery.
Please pray for all those affected, for the first responders and rescue teams, and for those providing hope and care in the midst of crisis.

"Indonesia has become a place of temporary refuge for thousands of people fleeing conflict and persecution, many of whom spend years waiting for permanent resettlement.
During this visit we did not talk about shrinking humanitarian support. We witnessed its effects firsthand."
