Today is World Hunger Day.

Did you know that Week of Compassion supports programs around the world that care for people experiencing hunger and food insecurity?

For instance, after devastating flooding in Pakistan, Week of Compassion supported local farmers in planting the crops they needed to recover and rebuild.

This photo shows one of many fields filled with peppers grown from seeds provided by Week of Compassion.

Hunger relief is about more than emergency aid. It’s about partnering with communities to build sustainable futures filled with dignity, resilience, and hope. Thank you for being a part of that work!

Around the world, millions of people are facing food insecurity caused by conflict, climate disasters, displacement, economic instability, and deep inequality. Yet hunger is not simply about a lack of food. It is about access, justice, dignity, and the systems that shape who is able to flourish and who is left vulnerable.

At Week of Compassion, we are grateful to partner with local churches, community organizations, and humanitarian partners around the world who are responding every day with courage, creativity, and compassion. From climate-resilient agriculture programs in Southeast Asia, to refugee support in the Middle East and Africa, to community-led recovery efforts after disasters, these partners are helping families not only survive, but build sustainable futures.

We believe communities closest to the challenges are also closest to the solutions. That is why we are committed to accompaniment, locally led response, and long-term resilience.

On World Hunger Day, we invite you to pray, learn, advocate, and give as we continue working toward a world where every person has enough — enough food, enough safety, enough opportunity, and enough hope.

On May 20th, join Disciples Immigration Legal Counsel Jonelle Ocloo for a webinar on supporting refugees to maintain their legal status in the US. In recent months, the Department of Homeland Security has announced its plan to re-review the initial claims of people resettled in the US as refugees. People who have not applied for a green card more than one year after refugee resettlement are particularly at risk for detention. In this webinar, Attorney Ocloo will go over this change in policy and the steps we can take to protect refugee families that Disciples have assisted in resettling over the years. Churches who have supported refugee resettlement should send a representative to attend.

Welcome! You are invited to join a meeting: Adjustment of Status Webinar . After registering, you will receive a confirmation email about joining the meeting.

The first time Lee Hull Moses (Senior Minister, Central Christian Church, Indy) ran the Indianapolis Mini Marathon, her kids made a finish line in their driveway. It was 2020, during covid-era virtual racing. As Lee said,

"This weekend (May 2) will be the fourth time I’ve run it, but it’s the first time I’ve been part of the initiative, a reminder that when it comes to helping out our neighbors near and far, it takes all of us.

I love how Week of Compassion has been building partnerships with local communities for generations now — so that when disaster strikes or a new need arises, they’ve got the connections to help right away. Supporting Week of Compassion is one of the ways we can be there, even if we can’t be there.

Usually when I run races like this, I’m just doing it for fun, which, when I think about it, is a ridiculous luxury, so I’m grateful for the opportunity to support a cause I care a lot about."

Last July, catastrophic flooding caused more than 100 deaths in central Texas and left widespread damage to land, riverbanks, and homes. Since then, Week of Compassion has partnered with local churches and ecumenical organizations, coordinating volunteer teams and support grants to assist in long-term recovery. (For more about volunteering, visit WeekOfCompassion.org/Volunteer)

Recently, one local partner - Ark of Highland Lakes, a ministry that networks churches to care for vulnerable neighbors in times of crisis – received a grant to support their staff in coordinating recovery and response. They shared this thank you note from Doris, a survivor whose story holds the entire purpose of this work.
