On July 4, 1845, three white men attacked John Tucker, a Black man, as he was walking peacefully in downtown Indianapolis, near the northwest corner of Washington Street and Illinois Street. He fought back but was outnumbered, and they beat him to death as a crowd of onlookers watched.

On September 30, 2023, the Indiana Remembrance Coalition joined with the Indiana Historical Bureau for the dedication of an official state marker to commemorate this crime.

We believe in the work of uncovering and telling the true history of all people. We support this work of justice as an act of hope.

"There can be no regret without knowledge." Eunice Trotter, Indiana Landmarks Society.

Thank you to all involved in the work of remembering John Tucker. The Indiana Remembrance Coalition is an in*******al group of volunteers coming from a wide range of faith practices who work in partnership with St. Luke’s.
