What if the most powerful step you could take toward a stronger spiritual life cost you nothing but your pride?

In this episode, we dive into one of the most essential — and most overlooked — foundations of spiritual health: humility. Not as a concept to admire, but as a real, intentional step you can take today.

We walk through three movements of humility drawn from Scripture:

1. Humble yourself in your own sight — Change begins internally. There comes a moment when you have to face what's there, stop making excuses, and say, "I have done this." That's not weakness. That's clarity.

2. Humble yourself before others — The church is family. It should be the one place where you can speak your hardest truths and express your deepest hurt. Don't let someone else's reaction determine your obedience to God.

3. Humble yourself before the Lord — God is opposed to the proud, but He gives grace to the humble. When you humble yourself under His mighty hand, He promises to lift you up at the proper time.

Scriptures Referenced:

Proverbs 23:7
1 Peter 1:22
1 Peter 5:5–6
Key Takeaway: Spiritual health begins with humility. When we humble ourselves — before ourselves, before others, and before God — we allow Christ to shape our hearts, we put on the armor of God, and we lay down the enemy's tools. And in due time, He lifts us up.

Excel & Reflect | Season 1, Episode 16
"Considering the Main Point"

We live in a world full of debate — over doctrine, over tradition, over the details of things we may never fully understand this side of eternity. But what if, in all that debate, we've been missing the point?
In this episode, we open God's Word and ask a simple but convicting question: What is the main point? From Paul's comforting words to the Thessalonians, to Peter's urgent call to holy living, to a boy who couldn't figure out his own bicycle — this lesson is a reminder that Scripture wasn't given to divide us over details. It was given to draw us into fellowship with Christ, to save us, and to shape us into the people God is calling us to be.
In this episode:

Why the Bible is our ultimate guide, standard, and instruction for life
The danger of letting tradition and personal paradigms override God's Word
A look at 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18 and what Paul really wanted us to take away
What 2 Peter 3 is actually calling us to do — and it's not debate
A challenge to let Scripture shape us, rather than the other way around

"What sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness?" — 2 Peter 3:11

Excel & Reflect Podcast with Garrett Bernethy Season 1, Episode 15 — "Three Things About Discipleship"

In a world constantly shaped by competing philosophies and a consumer culture that has even influenced how many people approach the church, what does it truly mean to follow Jesus? In this episode, Garrett opens up Luke 6:17-49 to unpack three essential truths about discipleship, the blessings it brings, the demands it makes, and the response it produces in the life of a genuine follower. Rooted in the Great Commission in Matthew 28:18-20, this episode is an honest and challenging reflection on what it means to move beyond simply attending church and into a life of real surrender, sacrifice, and service to Christ. If you've been asking what it actually means to follow Jesus, this episode is for you.
