Change your thinking ''2''

‘Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.’Philippians 4:8 NLT

In order to change your life, you must first change your thinking. And that’s not easy when you’ve spent your life thinking a certain way. Minister and columnist Dr Frank Crane said, ‘Our best friends and our worst enemies are our thoughts.’ King Solomon put it this way: ‘As [someone] thinks within himself, so he is.’ (Proverbs 23:7 NASB) To change your thinking, you must do it—one thought at a time. That calls for discipline and determination. But it’s worth it. If you wanted to compete in a marathon you wouldn’t go on an all-sugar diet, would you? The fuel you put into something determines its performance.

Yet we disregard this basic piece of wisdom: what you feed everything else is nothing compared to what you feed your mind! Here’s a truth that will transform you: think excellent thoughts! What enters your mind repeatedly, occupies it, shapes it, controls it and in the end expresses itself in what you do and who you become. Your mind will absorb and reflect whatever it’s exposed to. The events you attend, the relationships you build, the materials you read or don’t read, the music you listen to, the media images you’re exposed to, the conversations you engage in, and the thoughts you entertain all shape your mind, and eventually your character and your destiny. So, what should you do? Start each day by praying: ‘Lord, I want the kind of mind Your Word describes. One that’s filled with excellent, admirable, honourable, praiseworthy thoughts’ (see Philippians 4:8). Can you imagine what your life would be like if you constantly prayed that way and programmed your thinking accordingly?

A Prayer to Renew Your Mind

"Dear Heavenly Father, I come to You today asking for a transformation of my mind. I confess that I have allowed negative, fearful, and anxious thoughts to take root. Lord, I surrender these to You and ask that You remove any lies I have believed.

Please, Holy Spirit, renew my mind according to Your Word (Romans 12:2). Teach me to fix my mind on what is true, noble, just, pure, and lovely. When my thoughts wander toward fear or negativity, prompt me to redirect them toward Your truth.
I take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ. Transform my attitude so that I may bring life and honor to You. Thank You for the wisdom to think differently and the peace that follows a mind focused on You. In Jesus’ name, Amen"

Getting people to listen to you ''2''

‘The common people heard Him gladly.’ Mark 12:37 NKJV

The Bible says concerning Jesus: ‘The common people heard Him gladly.’ Why? Because His words were backed by these all-important things: His character, His conduct, and His concern for others. In short, Jesus earned the right to speak. Have you? Getting people to listen calls for: insight. When what you say truly helps somebody, you form a connection. Benjamin Franklin, one of the most admired figures in American history and known for his homespun wisdom, had a remarkable career. Interestingly, he had little formal education. He attended school for only two years, yet he was highly respected because of his knowledge and keen insight. A voracious reader and an intellectually curious man, he became expert in a remarkable number of areas: printing and publishing, politics, civic activism, the sciences, and diplomacy. He was an innovative inventor who secured the support of France during the Revolutionary War, founded the first public library in America, served as the first president of the American Philosophical Society, and helped draft the Declaration of Independence. Biographer Walter Isaacson called Franklin ‘the most accomplished American of his age and the most influential in inventing the type of society America would become.’ People felt a sense of connection when Franklin shared his wisdom. Here’s how this applies to you. When you love people, work hard, study, develop and share your expertise in a given area, they will learn to respect and listen to you. And when it comes to listening, you don’t get what you demand, you get what you earn.

A Prayer For Getting people to listen to you

Dear Jesus, our Savior,

We come before You, thanking You for Your unfailing love. We have put our trust in You, and we know that You hear our prayers. Lord, we ask that You would help others to listen openly and respond respectfully to us as they share their likes and dislikes. Guide their conversations, Lord, and let every word spoken be seasoned with grace and truth, just as Your Word teaches us, "Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one." (Colossians 4:6 WEB).

Lord, as we interact with others, Help us also to be a good listener. The Bible encourages us to "be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to wrath; for the wrath of man doesn't produce the righteousness of God." (James 1:19-20 WEB). Always aim to communicate with love and humility, as Jesus Himself modeled.

We rebuke any spirit of pride or arrogance that may hinder open and respectful communication. Instead, we put on the mind of Christ, who, being the very nature of God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to His own advantage; rather, He made Himself nothing (Philippians 2:6-7 WEB).

In Jesus' precious name, we pray. Amen.

The secret to surviving hard times ''2''

’Nothing is as wonderful as knowing Christ.’ Philippians 3:8

The secret to surviving hard times doesn’t lie in what you know, but who you know. You say, ‘Right now I’ve got more troubles than Job.’ Well, when the bottom dropped out of Job’s world, he said: ‘He knows the way that I take; when He has tested me, I will come forth as gold. My feet have closely followed His steps; I have kept to His way without turning aside. I have not departed from the commands of His lips; I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my daily bread.’ (Job 23:10–12 NIV)

And Paul’s life wasn’t a picnic either: ‘I have been in danger from rivers… from bandits… from my fellow Jews… from Gentiles; in danger in the city… in the country… at sea; and in danger from false believers. I have laboured and toiled and… often gone without sleep; I have known hunger and thirst and… often gone without food; I have been cold and naked. Besides everything else, I face daily the pressure of my concern for all the churches.’ (2 Corinthians 11:26–28 NIV)

Reading that list makes us ask the question, ‘How did he do it?’ Paul knew the secret to surviving hard times. What was it? He allowed his troubles to drive him closer to the Lord: ‘I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.’ (2 Corinthians 12:9–10 NIV)

Do you want what Job and Paul had? Then draw closer to the Lord—that’s the secret!

A Prayer for Trusting God in Hard Times

Lord, I thank You that You are the God of the impossible. You can do anything. I want to trust in Your ability and not my own. Teach me to see difficulties in my life from Your perspective. Help me to focus on You and Your power. I want to be like Joshua and Caleb who believed in a good report and focused on You even in hard circumstances (Numbers 14:7-9). My responsibility is to carefully read, trust, and obey Your Word. Today I bring before You this difficulty in my life [Name a hard situation you are right now facing]. Help me not to fear but to trust You in this situation. I declare my faith in Your ability to fulfill Your promises to me. You will fight for me and win the battles in my life. You are mighty, powerful, righteous and true.

Overcoming Approval addiction

’Fear of man will prove to be a snare.’ Proverbs 29:25 NIV

You can be addicted to a lot of different things like alcohol, drugs, s*x, gambling, and even food. But did you know you can also be addicted to approval? When Moses chose seventy leaders to help govern Israel, he told them, ‘Do not show partiality in judging; hear both small and great alike. Do not be afraid of anyone.’ (Deuteronomy 1:17 NIV) That is advice Peter should have taken. ‘Before certain men came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles. But when they arrived, he began to draw back and separate himself from the Gentiles because he was afraid of those who belonged to the circumcision group.’ (Galatians 2:12 NIV)

When your identity is wrapped up in other people’s acceptance, you set yourself up for approval addiction, because your sense of self-worth is always on the line. A notable French author said, ‘We’re so accustomed to wearing a disguise before others, that eventually we’re unable to recognise ourselves.’ That’s not how God wants you to live! No one’s approval or disapproval can affect you—unless you give it credibility. Jesus spoke without feeling the need to create an impression; therefore, He was free to speak the truth in love.

Someone wisely pointed out, that when we are young we worry about what people think and try to please them. When we are middle-aged, we get tired of trying to please everybody. And as we get older and wiser, we realise, most of the time, they weren’t even thinking about us at all! Guess what? There are times when pleasing God means you won’t be able to please people—and you must accept that!

A Prayer For Approval Addiction

Dear heavenly Father, it’s not just apostles who need to stay free from living for the approval of people, it’s all of us… it’s me. How can we possibly love very well if our need for affirmation is greater than our commitment to serve your purposes in the lives of people around us… family, friends, neighbors, even strangers?
As I look at my relational brokenness and sin, I can see how “man-pleasing” plays out in two directions. On one hand, there are those people, (metaphorically speaking!), to whom I attach my umbilical cord and expect them to give me life. On the other hand, there are those people whose umbilical cords I grab and plug into me, assuming the role of life giver. Oh Lord, what a mess I am… but what a merciful and gracious God you are.
Though it pains me to actually document my brokenness and sin in this prayer, the same liberating gospel you entrusted to Paul gives me the sweet freedom to do so. When we confess our sins to you, we’re not informing you of anything, Father, for you already know everything! We’re just acknowledging where we want the God of resurrection to bring life… the God of transforming love to effect change… the God of ultimate hope to replace shame with beauty.
Lord Jesus, I don’t want to live as an “approval suck.” I want to love others as you love me, and as you love them. It’s flat out wrong for me to give anybody the power to control me through their affirmation or their rejection. It’s because of your life of perfect obedience, that I can be free from living as a poser, pretender and performer. It’s because of your death for me on the cross, that I can live with the absolute assurance of God’s everlasting approval and his relentless kindness.
So, God the Holy Spirit, keep “gossiping this gospel” to my heart. Keep bearing witness with my spirit that I’m a beloved child of Abba, Father. Keep giving me the power to repent of all forms of living for the approval of people, a life-sucking snare, indeed. So very Amen, I pray, in Jesus’ liberating name.
