Today is Beltane, an important holiday in the Pagan tradition that ushers in the early summer months. Contemporary celebrations involve lighting huge bonfires, feasting, dancing, and re-enacting traditional rituals.

Historically, Beltane is tinged with darker elements. According to experts, ancient celebrations sometimes involved human sacrifices. One particularly grim method involved a large cake baked with one piece marked by charcoal. Cut into equal pieces and distributed randomly to participants, the individual who received the marked piece was designated for sacrifice to the god Beliunus.

Fortunately, this brutal practice was eventually shelved in favor of symbolic offerings during the celebrations.

May 1st also coincides with May Day, a day of international recognition for workers' rights that has prompted violent clashes between marchers and authorities.
