Founded in 1986 and an affiliate chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), HABJ represents media professionals across print, broadcast, digital media, education, and corporate communications. Guided by its mission to amplify Black voices and empower the next generation, the association champions excellence in journalism and fair, balanced coverage of the communities we all call home.

Exciting news for our city: Houston will host the 2027 NABJ Convention & Career Fair, August 4–8, 2027 — welcoming thousands of journalists and media professionals from across the country.

Congratulations to our very own Joy Sewing on earning her first National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) award! 🏆🎉

What makes this honor even more special is that the award-winning column highlighted the rich history of Riverside Terrace right here in Houston — a community and neighborhood that means so much to her.

There’s something powerful about telling the stories of the places that shaped us and being recognized on a national stage for doing it. We’re so proud to celebrate Joy and this well-deserved honor! 🖤✨

What a way to kick off the 2027 NABJ Houston party 🎉

Applause and cheers erupted as Houston's own - the great Melanie Lawson donated a grand total of $86,000 to the Houston Association and the National Association of Black Journalists - $43,000 each. 👏

The donation will be used for students who are pursuing careers in journalism. Once again we are blown away by her generous gift and commitment to journalism. Ms. Lawson is Houston and national tv history. Her pose, her wit and her undeniable talent has given us years of balanced and community focused reporting.

HABJ was represented in a major way at ! 🎤🔥

“Black Men at the Top: The Narrow Road to Becoming a Main Anchor” brought together some of the industry’s leading voices for an important conversation about the journey to the anchor desk and HABJ’s own Anthony Antoine of FOX 26 Houston dropped some gems! 💎

From navigating the industry to earning a seat at the table, this was a conversation filled with insight, experience and inspiration for the next generation of Black journalists.

🚨 HABJ Volunteers Needed! 💙🖤

We’re looking for volunteers this Saturday at 11:00 AM to help stuff Houston swag bags for the NABJ Conference in Atlanta! 🎉

The swag bags will be distributed at our Houston Kickoff Party, and we’d love your help making sure conference attendees receive a warm Houston welcome.
