BIBLE STUDY FELLOWSHIP, APRIL 12, 2012.

TRANSCRIPTON SUMMARY:

DISCIPLESHIP-

THE DISTRACTION OF LIFE

FACILITATOR: PASTOR CHARLES ADIUKWU; TRANSCRIBER/WRITER: JOAN NWULI.

Purpose of Discipleship : Jesus calls us to Himself to follow Him, know Him, learn from Him, be transformed to fulfill His will; and then, He sends us forth to bring others to Him ( Mark 3:14-16, Rev 4:11, Deut 8:1-2, Matt 4:10,18-19, Matt. 16:24, John 12:24-26)

Distractions: The distractions of life are the lusts of the flesh, lusts of the eyes and the pride of life (1 John 2:15-16). Satan tested both Eve and Jesus on these three things (Gen 3:6, Matt 4:1-11). Once we forget the purpose of discipleship, we become distracted. When we are distracted, we become detached from the Lord, for we cannot be true disciples of His when we do not abide in His will (John 5:19, 5:30; 8:29; John 15: 4-10).

To prevent Distraction: In our walk with Christ, we must all face trials, tribulations and temptations. We are to be mindful that Jesus does not tell us to do what He has not done Himself. While He was on earth, He was our example; for He did only the will of His father in heaven. To prevent distraction, we have to set our mind on things above, occupy ourselves with things of God, by seeking first the Kingdom of heaven (Matt 6:33), so we can be like our Father in heaven (Matt 5:43-48).

Case Study on Peter:

1. His calling: He had toiled all night and caught nothing but gave Jesus his boat at Jesus’s request. After his mighty catch, he forsook all the fish and followed Jesus (Luke 5:1-11). Jesus called Peter specifically to make him fisher of men, and he left all and followed Him (Matt 4:18-19).

2. Jesus knew Peter would be distracted--Jesus warned Peter of distraction and impending trial, but prayed that when he recovers , he would strengthen his brethren (Luke 22:32).

3. His Distractions and failures: Peter denied Jesus three times (Luke 22:56-60). He compared himself to John (John 21:20-22), Most important of all is that after Jesus resurrected and showed Himself to the disciples several times, Peter took the other apostles and went back to fishing (John 21:1-4)

4. His Recovery: When Peter recovered, he strengthened the disciples. He became a broken, humble, faithful true disciple of Jesus Christ. Peter then tells us to follow the example of Christ and to know that He (Jesus Christ) cares for us and will strengthen and establish us. (I Peter 2: 21-25, 5:5-11)

TODAY EVANGELICAL MINISTRIES: BIBLE STUDY FELLOWSHIP, APRIL 5, 2012.

TRANSCRIPTON SUMMARY: BEING A TRUE DISCIPLE OF CHRIST, PT 4: FULFILLING THE LAW OF CHRIST: FACILITATOR: EMEKA OZURUMBA; TRANSCRIBER: JOAN NWULI.

Fulfilling the law of Christ: This is what distinguishes a true disciple (a follower, learner, and student) of the Lord. It is not what we say but rather what we do that differentiates us from the children of the world (Matt 7: 20; John 10:25).

Perfect in Love: To demonstrate that we are children of our father in heaven, we must be perfect in love in our relationship with others as our heavenly father is perfect (Matt 5: 44-48). We cannot walk together with God unless we are in perfect agreement with Him (Amos 3:3, Gen 17-1). Without Love for others, we are not born of God and have not known him, for God is love (1John 4:7-8). Jesus mandates us to love one another as He has loved us in order that people will know that we are his disciples (John 13:34-35). Having love for others is what differentiates children of God from children of the devil (Matt 5:43-45; 1 John 3:10). We are murderers subject to judgment when we are angry without a cause with, or hate, or refuse to forgive our brethren (all) (Matt 5:22; 1 John 3:15). Further, God will not receive us or our gifts when we are not reconciled with our brethren (Matt 5: 23, 24). We must never take vengeance, or revenge, or pray against anybody, in order not to arouse God‘s wrath and anger against us (Gen 4:15; Ez 25: 12-17).

Submission: We must submit to one another, all spiritual and delegated (governmental) authorities for God appointed the authorities over us (Rom 13:1-5;l Eph 5:L21). We must accept chastisement and correction with joy and thanksgiving. If we harden our heart when rebuked, we shall be destroyed without remedy (Prov. 29:1).

False Doctrine and False Prophets: We must be careful not to submit to false, manipulative, deceptive, lying, “feel good” or money doctrines. Those who submit to false prophets shall surely share in the damnation of false prophets. Cursed is anyone who deceives in the name of the Lord. Cursed is the deceiver and the deceived where the deceived intentionally invites the deceiver. Woe is unto him who is deceived if he does not know the truth (Jer 14:14-16, Jer 23:34; 2 Thes2:9-12).

Oneness in Spirit, Mind and Soul: Disciples of God must work in oneness of spirit, mind and soul without comparing themselves to others, murmuring, complaining or gossiping. They must understand the mission they are on and whose mission it is (John 17:21-23). We are commanded to bear each others’ burden (Gal. 6:2); rejoice or weep with those who rejoice or weep (Rom 12:15); and suffer or be honored when one member suffers or is honored (1Cor 12:26).

Faithfulness: Without faithfulness we cannot be true disciples of Jesus Christ. The most venerable situation for a disciple is when he is tired, weary, hungry, or frustrated. In this situation, we must learn to make a covenant with our mouth, eyes and heart. A disciple cannot be distracted, but must guard his heart with all diligence (Prov. 4:23) and make sure that his heart and his mouth are in harmony. A faithful man is far better than an able man and is hard to find (Prov. 20:6). Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble is like a bad tooth or a foot out of joint (Prov. 25:19).

EASTER 2012: A TIME FOR SOBER REFLECTION AND CELEBRATION.
Emeka O. Ozurumba.

While it is certainly true that Easter is the most important and unpolluted event in the life of Christians, it is equally on record, from the totality of facts and circumstances surrounding our Christian walk and the church as an institution, that we crucify Christ afresh on a daily basis by what we actually do contrary to His Gospel and doctrine. It is prudent for us to sorrowfully mourn for the violence being unleashed by the same institution that is entrusted with the truth which is in Christ.
Indeed, Christ is risen and sits on the right hand of power and majesty, but how many of us today are truly risen with Him? “If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth” (Col 3: 1, 2). This refers to a new creature, totally fused together in spiritual agreement with Christ, created according to God, in righteousness and holiness (see Rom 6: 4- 6; Gal 3:27; Eph 4:24). It is not what we say, but what we do that bears witness that we are either with Christ or against Him (see Matt 5:16, Matt 7:20; John 10:25, John 8:39). Therefore, it is not all about celebration, but rather what we have become as a result of what Christ has done for us. Are we adhering to the only way, truth and life, or are we just worshipping and serving Him with our mouths which are in conflict with our hearts (see John 14: 6; Matt 15:8, 9)?
Therefore, this I say to us all, rejoice not because Christ is risen, but rather rejoice if we have risen with Him in implicit obedience to all His commandments (see Luke 10: 20). For it is written, “You are My friends if you do whatever I command you” (John 15:14). And again, “Not everyone who says to Me, Lord, Lord, shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven” (Mt 7: 21)
Have a blessed Easter with a difference.

PLACE OF PRAYER IN OUR LIFE

Emeka O. Ozurumba.

Although it is necessary for believers to pray without ceasing, they must however understand the significance and place of prayer in our spiritual order of priority. Prayer is neither the key to God’s heart nor is it as important as the least of all the commandments, or the beatitudes, or the fruits of the Holy Spirit. The keys to God’s heart are love and obedience; for the kingdom of God is anchored on these two keys, the character of God is defined by them, and the knowledge of the truth is the perfection of these two keys. Unfortunately, most of us pray more than we love and obey God. God disapproves of those who worship and serve Him with their mouths while their hearts are far from Him (see Is 29:13; Mt 15:8, 9). We receive from God not necessarily because we pray, but rather because we obey His commandments (see Is 58:1-9; Mt 6:33; John 15:7; I John 3:22; I John 5:14). One who abides (obeys/keeps) in God’s words can truly receive without praying or asking (see Mt 6:32, 33). On the other hand, God abhors the prayer or sacrifice of the wicked (see Ps 66:18; Prov. 1:24-33; Prov. 15:8; Is 1:10-20; Mich 3:4; Mt 5:23, 24).

We are only able to resist the devil and fight successful spiritual warfare when we first totally submit to God and put on His full armor (see James 4:7; Eph 6:11-13). This is only possible through implicit obedience (see Josh 1: 5-8). For we cannot exercise greater power over the enemy when we are not in spiritual agreement with God; and the sad experience of the seven sons of Sceva is a reminding warning to us (see Acts 19:13-17). Therefore, all the futile efforts of shouting, rebuking, binding, and praying do not cause the devil to flee; neither does vain recitation of scriptures, but rather unreserved and total submission to God through implicit obedience to His commandments.

What then is the purpose of prayer in our life? Praying is an indispensable way of maintaining, and keeping us from entering into temptation: an idle, weary, and fearful mind is a fertile ground for the enemy to overrun (see Mt 26:41). Praying avails a lot by keeping faith and hope alive in us, so that we do not faint, or get weary, or offend (see Prov. 24:10; Mt 6:25; Luke 18:1; 1 Th 5:17; Phil 4:6).

In essence, while prayer gives access to a privilege, obedience in other hand gives access to a right of ownership with confidence and boldness (see John 16:15; John 17:10; 1John 5:14, 15, Rev 22:14)). Therefore, let us exercise our walk of faith with spiritual understanding and godly priority. We are carefully advised that no matter whatever we get, we must get understanding; for while a house may be built with wisdom, knowledge, and discretion, it is only established on a foundation of rock with understanding (see Prov. 4:7; Porv. 24:3). So let us pray with understanding, but let love and obedience have their higher place and priority in our life.
