BIBLE STUDY FELLOWSHIP, APRIL 12, 2012.
TRANSCRIPTON SUMMARY:
DISCIPLESHIP-
THE DISTRACTION OF LIFE
FACILITATOR: PASTOR CHARLES ADIUKWU; TRANSCRIBER/WRITER: JOAN NWULI.
Purpose of Discipleship : Jesus calls us to Himself to follow Him, know Him, learn from Him, be transformed to fulfill His will; and then, He sends us forth to bring others to Him ( Mark 3:14-16, Rev 4:11, Deut 8:1-2, Matt 4:10,18-19, Matt. 16:24, John 12:24-26)
Distractions: The distractions of life are the lusts of the flesh, lusts of the eyes and the pride of life (1 John 2:15-16). Satan tested both Eve and Jesus on these three things (Gen 3:6, Matt 4:1-11). Once we forget the purpose of discipleship, we become distracted. When we are distracted, we become detached from the Lord, for we cannot be true disciples of His when we do not abide in His will (John 5:19, 5:30; 8:29; John 15: 4-10).
To prevent Distraction: In our walk with Christ, we must all face trials, tribulations and temptations. We are to be mindful that Jesus does not tell us to do what He has not done Himself. While He was on earth, He was our example; for He did only the will of His father in heaven. To prevent distraction, we have to set our mind on things above, occupy ourselves with things of God, by seeking first the Kingdom of heaven (Matt 6:33), so we can be like our Father in heaven (Matt 5:43-48).
Case Study on Peter:
1. His calling: He had toiled all night and caught nothing but gave Jesus his boat at Jesus’s request. After his mighty catch, he forsook all the fish and followed Jesus (Luke 5:1-11). Jesus called Peter specifically to make him fisher of men, and he left all and followed Him (Matt 4:18-19).
2. Jesus knew Peter would be distracted--Jesus warned Peter of distraction and impending trial, but prayed that when he recovers , he would strengthen his brethren (Luke 22:32).
3. His Distractions and failures: Peter denied Jesus three times (Luke 22:56-60). He compared himself to John (John 21:20-22), Most important of all is that after Jesus resurrected and showed Himself to the disciples several times, Peter took the other apostles and went back to fishing (John 21:1-4)
4. His Recovery: When Peter recovered, he strengthened the disciples. He became a broken, humble, faithful true disciple of Jesus Christ. Peter then tells us to follow the example of Christ and to know that He (Jesus Christ) cares for us and will strengthen and establish us. (I Peter 2: 21-25, 5:5-11)
