Dear students, faculty, and staff: join the Newman center for Ash Wednesday Mass today at noon as we begin the holy season of Lent.

We begin Lent marked with ashes—not to perform holiness, but to tell the truth: we need mercy, and God is rich in it.

“Rend your hearts, not your garments.” (Joel 2:13)
“Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned.” (Psalm 51)
“Now is the acceptable time… now is the day of salvation.” (2 Cor 6:2)

And Jesus reminds us: pray, fast, and give—in secret—because the Father who sees in secret is the One who heals what’s real. (Matthew 6)

Today’s move: return with your whole heart.

📌 Pick one simple practice for Lent:
🤲 almsgiving • 🙏 prayer • 🍞 fasting

February 18 | 🕛 12 Noon
TSU Catholic Newman Center
3535 Wheeler Ave

Mass + lunch afterward.

Sr. Thea Bowman: Champion of Black Catholic Spirituality ✊🏾

BREAKING: Sr. Thea Bowman’s Cause Moves to Rome! 🎉We joyfully share that the Diocese of Jackson will soon conclude the diocesan phase of the sainthood cause for Servant of God Sister Thea Bowman. On Monday, February 10, Bishop Joseph Kopacz will celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving as the cause officially moves to the Roman Phase—a major step toward Sr. Thea potentially being named Venerable.

💙💙💙

Sr. Thea Bowman was a force of nature. Born in 1937 in Yazoo City, Mississippi, and raised Protestant, she fell so deeply in love with the Catholic faith at age nine that she converted and later became a Franciscan sister.
Gifted with a brilliant mind, a beautiful voice, and a passion for God’s children, Sr. Thea dedicated her life to making the Catholic Church more accessible, relevant, and welcoming to Black Catholics. She was a teacher, evangelist, and scholar who earned her doctorate from The Catholic University of America right here in Washington, DC.
In 1987, she helped create Lead Me, Guide Me, the first African American Catholic Hymnal. She co-founded the National Black Sisters Conference. And in 1989, she addressed the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops on “What does it mean to be Black and Catholic?”—leaving bishops in tears and receiving a standing ovation.
Diagnosed with breast cancer in 1984, she prayed to “live until I die.” And she did—continuing her ministry in a wheelchair until her death in 1990.

Sr. Thea awakened fellowship across races and faiths. Let’s pray her cause continues forward swiftly! 🙏🏾

Merry Christmas to all.

O come, Thou Dayspring, from on high,
And cheer us by Thy drawing nigh;
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night,
And death’s dark shadows put to flight.

May the feast of the Nativity
disarm our hearts
and catch us up in the cause
that recognizes the dignity of everyone
by dismantling every system that
dehumanizes anyone.
Amen.

Most Rev. Roy E. Campbell, Auxiliary Bishop of Washington and Chair of the Subcommittee on African American Affairs reflects on the importance of Black Catholic History Month and the enduring faith of Black Catholics.

Let us continue to celebrate the gifts of Black Catholics, and all our unique cultural families, in the Catholic Church.

📖 Bible Study This Thursday
Thursday, November 19 at 7:00 p.m.
📍 TSU Catholic Newman Center — 3535 Wheeler Ave

We’ll gather for Bible Study with a theme that speaks for itself:
“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good. His love is everlasting.” (Psalm 136)

Thanksgiving runs through the Gospels in some of Jesus’ most powerful moments — when He gives thanks before feeding the crowds (Matthew 14:19; John 6:11), when He thanks the Father before raising Lazarus (John 11:41), and when He gives thanks at the Last Supper (Luke 22:19). Gratitude becomes the doorway to grace.

🍲 And yes — gumbo is on the menu!
Lovingly prepared by the Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary #159 from St. Mary of the Purification Church. A true Houston blessing in a bowl!

Come for Scripture. Stay for fellowship. Leave with a heart stretched a little wider in gratitude!🙏🏾

“This at last is bone of my bone
and flesh of my flesh.”
— Genesis 2:23

11•11•22 → 11•11•25

Stacy and I are still choosing each other.
Still becoming one.
Still amazed at the grace that holds us together.

We were married on Veterans Day — a reminder that love is not passive sentiment, but courage, sacrifice, faithfulness, and a willingness to serve something greater than ourselves.

“We love because He first loved us.” — 1 John 4:19 🤍

Happy Feast Day of St. Martin de Porres!

St. Martin de Porres was born in Lima, Peru on December 9, 1579. Martin was the illegitimate son to a Spanish gentlemen and a freed enslaved woman from of African descent from Panamá.

Martin, who spent long hours in prayer, found his only way into the community he longed for was to ask the Dominicans of Holy Rosary Priory in Lima to accept him as a volunteer who performed menial tasks in the monastery because Black men were not allowed to become full members of religious orders. In return, he would be allowed to wear the habit and live within the religious community. When Martin was 15, he asked for admission into the Dominican Convent of the Rosary in Lima and was received as a servant boy and eventually was moved up to the church officer in charge of distributing money to the poor.

Martin grew to become a Dominican lay brother in 1603 at the age of 24. Ten years later, after he had been presented with the religious habit of a lay brother, Martin was assigned to the infirmary where he would remain in charge until his death. He became known for encompassing the virtues needed to carefully and patiently care for the sick, even in the most difficult situations.

By the time he died, he was widely known. Talks of his miracles in medicine and caring for the sick were everywhere. After his death, the miracles received when he was invoked were so great that when he was exhumed 25 years later, his body exhaled a splendid fragrance and he was still intact.

St. Martin de Porres was beatified by Pope Gregory XVI on October 29, 1837 and canonized by Pope John XXIII on May 6, 1962.

November 3rd is his Feast Day, which is also Panama’s Independence Day.

“Let nothing disturb you,
Let nothing frighten you.
All things are passing; God never changes.”

Saint Teresa of Jesus (St. Teresa of Ávila)

Today’s readings remind us that holiness begins in the heart.

God shows no partiality (Romans 2:11), and true rest is found only in Him (Psalm 62).

✝️ Memorial of St. Peter Claver

Today we honor St. Peter Claver, the “Slave of the Slaves Forever,” who spent 40 years in Cartagena serving, baptizing, and defending the dignity of enslaved free human beings. His mission was shaped early on by the wisdom of St. Alphonsus Rodríguez, a humble Jesuit brother who encouraged Claver to give his life to God’s most forgotten children.

In 1909, the Knights of Peter Claver and Ladies Auxiliary were founded to carry on his legacy of faith, service, and justice.

The TSU Catholic Newman Center, founded by the Josephites, is blessed to walk in this tradition. This Fall, we look forward to establishing a collegiate council of the Knights of Peter Claver—forming young leaders rooted in the Gospel and service.

🙏🏾 St. Peter Claver, pray for us!
🙏🏾 St. Alphonsus Rodríguez, guide us in holiness!
🙏🏾 Knights and Ladies of Peter Claver, inspire us in faith and service!
