TRUE BEAUTY IS NOT IN FASHION

"Many for whom Christ gave His life have barely sufficient of the cheapest, most common clothing, while others spend thousands of dollars in the efforts to satisfy the never-ending demands of fashion." MYP 313.2

God does not condemn neatness or appropriate dress, but He warns against making fashion the pursuit of life. While millions struggle to obtain the necessities of life, others spend enormous amounts trying to keep up with changing styles. Fashion constantly promises satisfaction, yet it never says, "Enough." The heart that seeks fulfillment in outward appearance will always crave more.

As Christians, we are called to be good stewards of God's blessings. Instead of living to impress others, we should seek to honor God with our resources and remember those in need. True beauty is not found in expensive clothing but in a Christlike character that reflects humility, kindness, and love.

A person may spend a fortune wrapping a gift in beautiful paper, but if the box is empty, the wrapping has little value. In the same way, outward appearance may attract attention, but it is the beauty of a godly character that has lasting worth.

PUT GOD FIRST

"We should individually be willing to be put to any inconvenience, to be brought into any straits, rather than rob God of the portion that should come into His house." MYP 307.2

Faithfulness to God is not measured by how much we have left after meeting our own needs, but by whether we put Him first. There may be times when returning God's portion requires sacrifice or careful budgeting. Yet God's people are called to trust that the One who provides our daily bread will also supply our needs as we honor Him.

Giving to God should never depend on convenience. When we recognize that everything we possess comes from Him, returning His portion becomes an act of worship and trust. We may experience temporary difficulties, but we can never become poorer by being faithful to God.

A farmer who eats all the seed because times are difficult may satisfy today's hunger, but he will have no harvest tomorrow. The wise farmer protects the seed, trusting that it will produce a greater harvest in the future. Likewise, when we faithfully return what belongs to God, we demonstrate our confidence that He will continue to provide for us.

LOVE DESERVES A RESPONSE

"...shall we continually receive His favors with indifference, and make no response to His love?" MYP 306.1

Every day we enjoy countless blessings from God—life, health, family, food, protection, and above all, the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. Yet it is possible to receive these blessings so often that we begin to take them for granted. Love that is continually received but never appreciated reveals a heart that has grown indifferent.

God does not seek our gratitude because He needs it, but because thanksgiving draws us closer to Him. A heart that recognizes God's goodness naturally responds with love, obedience, worship, and cheerful service. The greatest response we can give to God's love is to surrender our lives completely to Him.

Imagine a child whose parents provide food, clothing, education, and constant care, yet the child never says "thank you" and never shows appreciation. We would call that ingratitude. In the same way, God continually showers us with blessings, and He longs for us to respond with thankful hearts and loving obedience.

WHAT BELONGS TO GOD

"The tithe ... is the Lord's.' Here the same form of expression is employed as in the law of the Sabbath. 'The seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God.' God reserved to Himself a specified portion of man's time and of his means, and no man could, without guilt, appropriate either for his own interests." MYP 305.2

Everything we have belongs to God, but He has set apart a specific portion of our time and our income as holy. The Sabbath reminds us that God is Lord of our time, and the tithe reminds us that He is Lord of our possessions. Returning the tithe and keeping the Sabbath are not acts of generosity toward God—they are acts of faithfulness, acknowledging His ownership of all that we are and all that we have.

When we keep the Sabbath and faithfully return the tithe, we declare that God comes first in our lives. We recognize that our success does not come merely from our own effort but from His blessing. Keeping what God has reserved for Himself is not gain—it is taking what He has declared holy.

Suppose a landlord rents you a farm and says, "Everything you harvest is yours, except the produce from one small field. That field belongs to me." If you take the harvest from that field, you have not become richer—you have taken what was never yours. Likewise, God has entrusted us with many blessings, but He has reserved the Sabbath from our time and the tithe from our increase as holy unto Him.

CALLED TO SOMETHING HIGHER

"We sin against ourselves when we are satisfied with enough to eat and drink and wear. God has something higher than this before us." MYP 299.2

God did not create us merely to survive but to serve. If our greatest ambition is to earn a living, buy clothes, and satisfy our physical needs, we have settled for far less than God's purpose for our lives. He calls us to grow in character, to reflect Christ, to serve others, and to prepare for eternity. The things of this life are necessary, but they were never meant to become the goal of life.

Jesus taught that life is more than food and clothing. God promises to provide our daily needs, but He invites us to seek first His kingdom. When we make Christ our highest priority, we discover that the greatest treasures are not material possessions but a life lived for His glory.

An eagle was not created to spend its life scratching the ground like a chicken. It was made to soar high above the mountains. Likewise, God did not create us merely to live from one meal to the next. He created us to rise above earthly ambitions and live for His eternal purpose.

MUSIC: A DOOR TO THE HEART

"Satan has no objection to music, if he can make that a channel through which to gain access to the minds of the youth." MYP 295.1

Music is never morally neutral. It has the power to shape our emotions, influence our thoughts, and mold our character. God intended music to glorify Him and uplift the soul, but Satan seeks to use the same gift to distract people from God and make sin appear attractive. That is why Christians must choose their music with prayerful discernment.

The real question is not, "Do I enjoy this music?" but, "What is this music doing to my heart?" If it weakens my desire to pray, study the Bible, or obey God, then it is leading me away from Christ. Music should draw us closer to heaven, not closer to the world.

Medicine can heal when it is the right prescription, but the wrong medicine can make a person sick. Likewise, music can either nourish the soul or slowly poison it. Its influence depends on what we choose to listen to.

THE POWER OF MUSIC

"Satan has no objection to music, if he can make that a channel through which to gain access to the minds of the youth." MYP 295.1

Music is one of God's greatest gifts. It has the power to encourage, comfort, inspire, and draw our hearts closer to Him. But because music has such a powerful influence on the mind, Satan also seeks to use it to shape our thoughts, values, and desires. The question is not whether music influences us—it is how it influences us.

The music we listen to should lead us toward Christ, not away from Him. If a song stirs pride, impurity, anger, or worldliness, it is weakening our spiritual life, regardless of how attractive the melody may be. We should choose music that elevates the mind, strengthens our faith, and helps us reflect the character of Jesus.

A river supplies life to a city when its water is clean. But if the source becomes polluted, the same river spreads disease instead of health. Likewise, music is a powerful channel. When it carries truth and purity, it blesses the soul. When it carries influences contrary to God, it quietly corrupts the heart.

THE MUSIC OF HEAVEN

"The melody of praise is the atmosphere of heaven; and when heaven comes in touch with the earth there is music and song." MYP 291

Praise is the language of heaven. Throughout the Bible, God's people responded to His goodness with songs of thanksgiving and worship. When our hearts are filled with gratitude, praise naturally follows. Singing to God does not merely express our joy—it also lifts our minds above our circumstances and reminds us of His faithfulness.

Heaven is not filled with complaining, murmuring, or discouragement. It is filled with praise because everyone recognizes the love and goodness of God. When we choose to praise God even during trials, we bring a little of heaven's atmosphere into our daily lives. A grateful heart is a testimony that God is still worthy of worship, regardless of our circumstances.

When the sun rises, darkness disappears without a struggle. In the same way, when the heart is filled with praise, discouragement and bitterness begin to lose their hold. Praise does not change God—it changes us.

GUARD THE AVENUES OF THE SOUL

"Those who would not fall a prey to Satan's devices must guard well the avenues of the soul. The mind should not be left to wander at random upon every subject that the adversary of souls may suggest." MYP 285.2

The mind is the gateway to the heart. Satan knows that if he can control our thoughts, he can influence our words, actions, and character. That is why God calls us to guard the "avenues of the soul"—our eyes, ears, and mind. We cannot always prevent a temptation from appearing, but we can choose whether to dwell on it or turn our thoughts to Christ.

An undisciplined mind is an easy target for temptation. When we allow our thoughts to wander without restraint, we open the door to influences that weaken our faith. Instead, we should intentionally fill our minds with Scripture, prayer, and things that are pure and uplifting. A mind occupied with Christ has little room for Satan's suggestions.

A homeowner does not leave the front door wide open at night and expect thieves to stay away. He locks the doors to protect what is valuable inside. Likewise, we must guard the door of our minds, allowing only those thoughts that honor God to enter.

"Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life." (Proverbs 4:23)

THE ONLY SURE FOUNDATION

"The heart must be renewed by divine grace, or it will be in vain to seek for purity of life. He who attempts to build up a noble, virtuous character independent of the grace of Christ, is building his house upon the shifting sand." MYP 285.1

Good character cannot be produced by human effort alone. A person may change outward habits, speak kindly, or appear morally upright, but unless the heart is transformed by the grace of Christ, the change will not last. True purity begins on the inside, where the Holy Spirit renews the heart and gives us new desires.

Many people try to overcome sin through willpower alone. While self-discipline has its place, it can never replace God's grace. Lasting victory comes when we surrender our lives to Christ and allow Him to do in us what we cannot do for ourselves.

A tree does not become healthy by having its leaves painted green. If the roots are diseased, the tree will eventually wither. The solution is not to change the appearance but to restore the roots. Likewise, God does not merely improve our behavior—He transforms our hearts.

"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." (2 Corinthians 5:17)
