Congregation Mishkan Israel A progressive Reform synagogue, demographically diverse, and socially active. More than a place. We're a community.

Congregation Mishkan Israel seeks to transform our lives and our world through prayer, learning, and tikkun olam, repairing our world. We are also committed to ensuring the continuity of Jewish culture and heritage. Established in 1840, CMI is the oldest synagogue in Connecticut and the oldest continually operating synagogue in New England. We are proud that our beautiful mid-century modern building recently was added to the National Register of Historic Places, and even prouder of our community’s commitment to tikkun olam, which has manifested itself through leadership in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960’s and, in recent years, an emphasis on immigration and racial justice. CMI welcomes interfaith families and people of any race, background, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or ability.

Today marks three years since October 7th, 2023, the deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust, when more than 1,200 men, women, and children were murdered and 251 people were taken hostage.

Healing requires space to mourn and grieve. And when words are insufficient, art can fill the void. One of the most powerful memorials was conceived by artist Yaffa Solomon. Her project “Anemones Before the Rain” brought together artists across Israel, who lovingly handcrafted over 15,000 red anemones made from black clay to place at memorial sites around Israel. In the rainy season, fields of these red flowers blanket the landscape of Southern Israel.

These photos were taken by Rabbi Schaefer during his visit to Israel last winter. They surround the photos and bios of the 411 people killed at the Nova Music Festival. May the memories of those who died on this day be for a blessing and may their stories and legacy of love, courage, and heroism live on.

When you need to hang a banner but need rope. Then you look down to find a nylon rope running along the road. Divine intervention? Thank G-d!
