Self-Control: The Brakes That Keep Life on Track

A powerful engine means nothing without strong brakes. In life, desire is the engine, but self-control is the brake that keeps us from crashing.

Many people know their habits are destructive—whether it’s addiction, anger, or reckless spending—but they can’t stop themselves. They think they have control, but in reality, their heart is leading them toward disaster.

True freedom comes not from doing whatever we want, but from learning to control the heart’s impulses. Those who master self-control can steer their lives toward success, while those who don’t will always be chasing after desires they can never satisfy.

Desires: Have You Learned Self-Control?

A man’s desires have no end, but his abilities do. The problem begins when desires grow beyond control.

A hardworking father once struggled to provide for his family. His son, understanding their hardships, never asked for more than they could afford. But when the family’s income increased, so did their desires—new shoes, better clothes, and outings with friends. Gratitude faded, and dissatisfaction grew.

More money didn’t bring more happiness; it only fueled greater desires. True success isn’t just about earning more—it’s about mastering the heart’s cravings.

GNCorps is a unique opportunity for college-aged men and women to travel abroad and directly engage in all aspects of a foreign culture: language, cuisine, performing arts, architecture, sports, and sightseeing.

Like a River, the Heart Has a Flow

Many people try to change their lives—quitting bad habits, addictions, or negative cycles—but fail despite their best efforts. The problem isn’t just determination; it’s the flow of the heart.

Julio, a long-time drug addict, never questioned his life—until one day, hungry and desperate, he found himself eating spoiled bread from the trash. At that moment, he realized how far he had fallen. That realization shifted his heart, and for the first time, he was able to truly listen to those who wanted to help him.

Change doesn’t begin with effort. It begins when the heart finds a new flow.
