Client Story: After a hospital stay for pneumonia led to a diagnosis of lymphoma in his right armpit, Brad is beginning treatment at the Sletten Cancer Institute. Managing on a tight budget—with only $200 remaining for food and essentials after his $700 monthly rent—Brad recently found much-needed support at the Emilie Center. He was grateful for the opportunity to get "all cleaned up" with new clothes, praising the Center's organized, pressure-free environment and kind volunteers. Brad, who celebrated several months of sobriety, also relies on a supportive friend for transportation and utilizes his landlord’s shower. To help bridge the gap created by high food costs, he is connecting with resources like St. Jude Conference for home food delivery and Opportunities Inc. for grocery vouchers.

Let there Be Light

The Emilie Center is shining a little brighter, thanks to a grant from the Gianforte Family Foundation. A newly installed LED lighting system has transformed its building, making it more energy-efficient and easier for clients to find the items they need.

The Great Falls nonprofit provides free clothing, furniture, baby supplies, and household essentials to individuals and families referred by more than 50 local agencies.

“This lighting has completely changed the feel of the space,” said Emilie Center President Barry O’Connell. “It’s brighter, more cheerful, and it helps our clients see what’s available so they can shop with dignity and confidence.”

Prior to the upgrade, the building’s incandescent and fluorescent fixtures were dim, inefficient, and increasingly difficult to maintain.

A ministry of St. Martin de Porres Mission, the Emilie Center is entirely staffed by a team of 40 volunteers. Since its founding, the center has served more than 19,360 people, distributing goods valued at over $1.1 million. In 2025 alone, the nonprofit helped more than 2,760 clients.

“Our clientele is incredibly diverse,” volunteer Cindy O’Connell said. “We serve people with disabilities, domestic violence survivors, veterans, and families starting over with empty apartments. Having basic furniture and household items gives people comfort and stability so they can focus on rebuilding their lives.”

Carmen, who recently left an abusive situation, is now living with her daughter and two grandchildren. Thanks to the community's donations, she received much-needed clothing and kitchen items. In the absence of income, this act of receiving tailored assistance not only met tangible needs but also reinforced Carmen's sense of self-worth and capability, fostering gratitude and hope for the future.
