Proclaming the gospel of Jesus at the corner of Jefferson Ave.

I read an article that people are leaving Christianity for secularism. Then why is it when we have a national disaster like 911 that people flood to churches. I suspect that people have an issue with churches not with God.

The minor prophets are called minor not because of their content. Many of the minor prophets are only 1 to 3 chapters but their message is significant both for the people they wrote too and for us today.....our God is still in action.

The churches new web sight is updated. The web site is: Southlawncog.org I have completed new study guides from the minor prophets. I will be sharing them hear and on the new web site. The series " The voice of the prophet" has been used in several home bible studies . The Old Testament can still teach us much about living for God today. Elder Lynn Berry

This Sunday we will start a new Bible study. The Bible calls Christians to have the same mind of Christ. This is difficult task when the world we live in distracts us, trials and troubles steal our joy. The Bible provides instruction for achieving joy even in a world of dispair. Come join us Elder Lynn Berry

BIBLE READING... How long does it take to read the Bible? The answer is 7 hours and 22 minutes. That is the length of the NIV Bible being read out loud by Max McLean. You can purchase it for your IPod.
So if Max reads the Bible in 77 hours and 22 minutes - thatis a total of 4642 minutes. If you read at Max's pace (which is not fast since it is dramatic and out loud) - it would take you 12 minutes and 43 seconds per day for you to read the Bible through in a year.
Have you ever read God's word through? Several people have mentioned they would like a daily Bible reading program. How about joining us in this very worthwhile prusuit - to read the Bible through in a year! If we begin now we will be finished before Easter next year. When reading ask yourself, what is God saying to me in this chapter, verse? This is a great thing to do for family time at night with your children also. Only takes about 15 minutes of your day, and once you get going, your will find it easier as it becomes more of your daily routine. We encourage you read the Bible and become familar with God's word.
2nd TIMOTHY 3:16-17, "All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the person of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." Here is the plan for this week starting today.
Today: Genesis chapter 1-2, Psalms 1
Mon: Genesis 3-5 Psalms 2
Tues: Genesis 6-9 Psalms 3
Wed: Genesis 10-11 Psalms 4
Thurs: Genesis 12-14 Psalms 5
Fri: Genesis 15-17 Psalms 6
Sat: Genesis 18-20 Psalms 7

" God made me this way." How many times have you heard this from non christian and christian friends alike? Seems to be a very overused phrase in our day and age. But is this a true statement that is held up by scripture? In GALATIANS 5:16-21, Paul writes believers the following, "16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do what you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, or**es, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God."
Paul tell us that our human nature is not what God wants for us. Christian character is produced by the Holy Spirit working in us to make us more Christ like. Not a moral discipline of following the law, or being a good person, but by accepting Christ the Holy Spirit is given to us to convict us of our sinful nature and produce in us the Christian virtues. GALATIANS 5:22-24 tells us, "22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires." We are all tempted by the human nature. We read in 1 CORINTHIANS 10:13 "13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it." We are all born into the sinful nature of this world, which is contrary to the way of the spirit. God did not make us this way, and if we live by the human nature we cannot plaese God. God has given us a "way out" by accepting Jesus as our Lord and Savior we will receive the Holy Spirit which will direct us in a way of life which pleases God, produces fruit, and leads to eternal life.

Southlawn has had 6 baptisms in the last couple months. On New Years Day 2012 we begin with the baptism of Mike Miller. This was a unique baptism, Richard sat down with Mike in front of the Congregation in a "question and answer session" regarding Mike's decision to be re-baptized, and his faith and study of scripture that lead to his journey in Christ. Mike explained that he believed through further study of the scriptures that his baptism was not obedient to God's word. We see an example of a rebaptism in Act's 18 and 19 when on the Paul’s 3rd missionary journey from Antioch of Syria, he re-baptized 12 men at Ephesus who had received an incorrect baptism. Mike shared with the congregation that his faith began at an early age reading the Bible with his mother, Barb Miller. Although Mike's family briefly attended a different church as a child, most of his faith was based in what he read with his mother at home, and they did not attend church. Barb also briefly attended Southlawn church as a child back in the early 1940's. In 1995 Mike's mom was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, so advanced that surgery was not an option. Mike was desperate for another opinion, and gave his mother's xrays to a long time friend Dr. Don Schanz, who was doing his medical internship at the UofM. Don gave the xrays to some of the best Thoracic surgeons in the country at the Uof M. The doctors all told Don, there was nothing that could be done, even with treatment, the patient in these xrays would probably be dead in 3-6 months. Barb, never prayed to be cured, or for a miracle, but just for acceptance of God's will. 6 months after the diagnoses and receiving chemotherapy and radiation Barb was found to be completely cancer free in November of 1995. Barb fully believed this was only the work of God, which lead Mike and his mother into even a deeper faith and conviction to God. Mike was baptized in August 1997. In 1998 Barb asked Mike if he would attend church at Southlawn with her. Mike agreed and they began attending, which resulted in even more of her children attending and being baptized. Mike said that his mother and him always felt at home with the people attending Southlawn. Barb lived 9 years after her diagnoses of terminal lung cancer, which Mike believes allowed his mother to come full circle in her faith in God, all praise be to God. Mike continued to study the scriptures and felt it was layed upon his heart to be re-baptized in an more accurate accordance with God's word. Mike explained that although God is a loving and forgiving God, he does required obedience to his word, and as a Christian we are to continually examine and seek the truth in the scriptures. Mike entered the water's of baptism and in accordance with Acts 2:38, (" Peter replied, Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.") making the decision to accept Jesus as his Lord and Savior, like in the Hymn sung before Mike's baptism;
I have decided to follow Jesus,
I have decided to follow Jesus.
I have decided to follow Jesus;
no turning back, no turning back.
Verse 2:
Though none go with me, still I will follow,
though none go with me, still I will follow.
Though none go with me, still I will follow;
no turning back, no turning back.
Verse 3:
The world behind me, the cross before me,
the world behind me, the cross before me.
The world behind me, the cross before me;
no turning back, no turning back.

Happy New Year, did you make any New Years resolutions this year? Pastor Richard shared that this is the perfect time to resolve to follow. Many times the resolutions we make only serve ourselves, why not make one with eternal salvation in mind. As a Christian we should be resolving each day to live our lives in a Christ like manner, think of the popular acronym, "WWJD". As written in James 1:22 "But don't just listen to God's word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves." Don not focus on where you have been, using the word of God as our guide, let's move forward resolving today, and each day to follow God's word. Remember the Bereans in Acts 17:11, "Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true." This year lets resolve to study and follow God's word.

Join us tomorrow to bring in the New Year praising and worshipping God. We will be celebrating communion, and Mike Miller will be Baptized tomorrow, and give a testimony about his faith and growing understanding of God's word. Mike's brothers, Doug and Denny Miller and their families also attend Southlawn.

Acts 2:38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." This was Peter's response to the people of Isreal that came to hear Jesus, who was crucified by them was made Lord and Savior by God. The scriptures say they were "cut to the heart" and wanted to know how to resolve this. Today, 3 people came forward and accepted the message that Jesus is their Lord and Savior and were buried in the waters of Baptism. They have been involved in a home bible study for about a year at Carol Davidson's home and answered God's call. Praise God for his continued work in the lives of believers!!
