On May 5, 1862, the 8th New Jersey repulsed an intense attack by Confederate forces at the Battle of Williamsburg, Virginia. During the attack, Private John Coyneโ€™s pocket watch deflected an incoming projectile, causing the damage seen here. Coyne survived and served until the end of the war.

See this pocket watch and other artifacts in the new exhibit "A Rough Coarse Life: The World of the Civil War Soldier" in your next trip to . http://ow.ly/lMb650JXGaa

159 years ago today, the 8th NJ was dispatched to plug a hole in the 3rd Corps line in the wheatfield at Gettysburg. Based on morning reports from June 28, they had only 137 men and 14 officers ready for duty. The 8th would defend their poor, swampy position against another 8th, the 8th Georgia, a regiment over twice its size that had the high ground of Rose Hill to look down on the exposed boys from New Jersey.

By the morning of July 3rd, 1863, there would only be only around 100 remaining in the regiment from the over 900 that left Trenton less than two years prior.
