"Constantius, the father of Constantine, tested the character of his Christian servants, by the imperative command to offer sacrifices to his gods. Some sunk under the trial. The joy of restored Israel in the land of Canaan, and the deliverance of creation from the bo***ge of corruption, all hang upon the cross of the Lord Jesus Christ. His sorrows and sufferings have secured the Church's glory, Israel's restoration, and the blessing of the whole creation. It forms the center of all the divine purposes and counsels; it harmonizes all the divine attributes; it secures upon immutable principles the glory of God and the sinner's peace; on it may be inscribed in indelible characters "Glory to God in the highest,, and on earth peace, good will toward men."

EVER SINCE THE SAVIOUR CAME

Ever since the Saviour came nothing is the same.
One day of all the days of earth, one solitary promised Birth,
One Name and all is turned to mirth:

THE LOVE OF GOD
(Frederick Lehman - 1917)

Could we with ink the ocean fill,
And were the skies of parchment made,
Were every stalk on earth a quill,
And every man a scribe by trade;
To write the love of God above
Would drain the ocean dry;
Nor could the scroll contain the whole,
Though stretched from sky to sky.

This third stanza of this hymn was found written on a cell wall in a prison some 200 years ago. It is not known who the prisoner was or why he was there. Mr. Lehman (who had suffered financial hardship) carried this poem he had recorded on a small card he used as a bookmark and added it to this hymn - The Love of God
