PALM SUNDAY | SERVING GOD FROM THE HEART

"𝐻𝑜𝑠𝑎𝑛𝑛𝑎 𝑡𝑜 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑆𝑜𝑛 𝑜𝑓 𝐷𝑎𝑣𝑖𝑑."--𝑆𝑡. 𝑀𝑎𝑡𝑡. 21:9.

Today, my dear brethren, we are reminded of that hour in the life of our Lord on earth in which He was receiving from the people of His own nation all the honor they could render Him. He then entered the chosen city of God in triumph over all who had opposed Him.

Thousands surrounded Him, went before Him and followed after Him. They paved the road before Him with their own clothing and with the branches of trees, that they might thus make His entry into Jerusalem as glorious as possible.

In a few days, when He had been arrested by His enemies, where was this great crowd? Where were those who had cried out so fervently, ''Hosanna to the Son of David''? But few could there be found.

The rest had either deserted Him or joined in with the crowd that mocked Him even while He was dying on the Cross. Nearly all had abandoned Him in the day of His adversity. The first test of their faith in Him, the first trial that proved the strength of their love for Him, found them entirely wanting in that characteristic of true love, fidelity to the end.

Is it impossible for us to do as they did? No; it is not impossible, for many who are Catholics born and bred do the same thing now.

But who are these? They are those who fail to keep the Ten Commandments of God and the precepts and laws of the Church.

Every Catholic who breaks the Commandments of God and refuses to obey the laws of the Church does worse than those did who deserted our Lord when He was condemned and crucified.

With their lips they declare they are Catholics, and in this way cry out "Hosanna to the Son of David," but in their hearts and lives they live and associate with the enemies of Christ.

But why are these men worse than the others? Simply because they received the graces of Christ in their baptism, in their confirmation, and in their First Communion, as well as in their many Communions thereafter.

In Communion they receive our Lord Himself, the Lord of eternal glory who is eternal life itself. These have been, in truth, members of the kingdom of heaven, but have cast themselves out by not keeping the Commandments of God, by not obeying the laws of the Church.

Truly does the Scripture say of many of them: "He that wandereth out of the way of understanding shall remain in the congregation of the dead." For dead many of them are apparently--dead eternally. They seem to be in the spiritual slumber of eternal death. They appear to be eternally judged; their eternal fate already sealed.

Why do I say this? Because nothing can move their hearts to return to God. Missions, sermons, exhortations, threatenings, warnings, counsels, the prayers and entreaties of fathers, mothers, kindred, and friends are all unheeded by them, are all in vain.

Even the tears of their fathers and mothers, and the blushes of shame whenever they are alluded to by friends, have no effect upon them, none whatever. They will not return to God.

Poor souls! Remember that whatever excuse you make to yourselves, this is true, that those who keep the Commandments and the laws of the Church show they are the true friends of our Lord; those who do not keep these show to all in heaven and earth that they are His enemies. We have but one sure and positive test of our love for our Lord.

The Ten Commandments and the laws of the Church constitute that test. All who really love Him keep this faithfully. "If you love Me," said our Lord, "keep My commandments."

All who do not love Him break them and disregard them. God Himself is not their friend. They have no part in the triumphs of our Lord on this day. It is true they cry out with us " Hosanna to the Son of David,'' but in their lives they side with His enemies and crucify our Lord.

What, then, is to be done? Let those who are faithful profit by the terrible examples of these abandoned souls. Let them dread and tremble lest they also be brought into the same state by their increasing tepidity and neglect.

Let them care to secure to our Lord a complete triumph in their own souls that He may rule there in time and eternity. "The kingdom of God is within you," said our Lord, and the Christian soul is truly the throne of God.

None but faithful or truly repentant souls can cry out to-day, in all sincerity, "Hosanna to the Son of David."

𝗗𝗜𝗚𝗜𝗧𝗔𝗟 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗠𝗨𝗡𝗜𝗢𝗡: 𝗔 𝗠𝗢𝗗𝗘𝗥𝗡 𝗜𝗡𝗩𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡

What is digital Communion? Is it about receiving Holy Communion online, as some people wished could be the case with sacramental absolution of sins?

No, digital Communion has nothing to do with the Internet (even though its appearance in the Catholic Church coincided with that of the first personal computer some fifty years ago).

Digital Communion is a modern invention; it never existed in Christian antiquity.

𝙄𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙩𝙖𝙠𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙎𝙖𝙘𝙧𝙚𝙙 𝙃𝙤𝙨𝙩 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙤𝙣𝙚’𝙨 𝙛𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙥𝙪𝙩𝙨 𝙞𝙩 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙤 𝙤𝙣𝙚’𝙨 𝙤𝙬𝙣 𝙢𝙤𝙪𝙩𝙝...

𝗡𝗼 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗱

Why a new expression, then? Digital Communion, you may think, merely describes Communion on the hand. If this were the case, there would be nothing new to add, since you were told that Communion on the hand had always existed. Communion on the hand, you learnt, was used by early Christians.

For a few centuries, in some regions, the Sacred Host was laid by the priest into the right hand of the communicant (her hand veiled if a woman). The right hand was deemed nobler than the left one.

At Holy Communion the communicant would bow his head low towards his right palm and would receive the Sacred Host directly with his lips and tongue, without using his fingers at all.

In his latest book Christus Vincit: Christ’s Triumph over the Darkness of the Age (Angelico Press, 2019), Bishop Athanasius Schneider describes palm-to-mouth Communion as follows:
“[𝙏]𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝙝𝙖𝙙 𝙖 𝙙𝙞𝙛𝙛𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢 𝙞𝙣 𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙣 𝙞𝙩 𝙙𝙤𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙤𝙙𝙖𝙮: 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙃𝙤𝙡𝙮 𝙀𝙪𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙨𝙩 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙚𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙙 𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙖𝙡𝙢 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙛𝙖𝙞𝙩𝙝𝙛𝙪𝙡 𝙬𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙤𝙪𝙘𝙝 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙃𝙤𝙡𝙮 𝙃𝙤𝙨𝙩 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 𝙛𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙧𝙨, 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙝𝙖𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙗𝙤𝙬 𝙙𝙤𝙬𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙖𝙡𝙢 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙎𝙖𝙘𝙧𝙖𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙙𝙞𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙡𝙮 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 𝙢𝙤𝙪𝙩𝙝, 𝙩𝙝𝙪𝙨, 𝙞𝙣 𝙖 𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙤𝙛 𝙖 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙛𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙 𝙗𝙤𝙬 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙪𝙥𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩.”

Why this?

The reason is that using one’s fingers to seize something denotes authority and power over the thing. And this seemed disrespectful toward the Sacred Host who is God Himself.

Only the priest celebrant at Mass consumes the Sacred Host from his own fingers, because he has just consecrated the Sacred Species. The celebrant is the only one acting in the Person of Christ as consecrator of the Holy Eucharist.

This enables him to act later on as distributor of the same sacrament, by virtue of his identity as “sacerdos”, literally, “the one who gives the sacred”; and in direct fulfilment of Christ’s mandate to his apostles in the multiplication of the loaves prefiguring Holy Communion: “give you them to eat” (Mt 14:16).

Traditionally, priests attending Holy Mass wouldn’t receive Holy Communion from their own fingers, but on their tongue from the priest celebrant. This is still the case for newly ordained priests who receive Holy Communion on the tongue from the bishop at their Mass of ordination in the traditional form.

Thus, rather than digital Communion, our Christian forefathers in antiquity chose a gesture that to them best expressed reverence and the gratuitous gift from God communicating Himself truly to us under the externals of a little piece of bread.

These early Christians knew very well that the presence of God in the Host is not imaginary or merely symbolic; but on the contrary, that it is true, real and substantial.

Furthermore, time and again the Fathers of the Church drew attention to the fact that even small fragments of a Sacred Host are the Lord. Each fragment is God, literally.

Using directly one’s lips and tongue to consume the Sacred Host lying on one’s palm was thus also more secure than using one’s digits, since small fragments adhering to the palm would then be consumed as well rather than be lost on fingertips.

Out of reverence for the Lord, the Fathers of the Church also insisted strongly on the washing of hands necessary before such Communion in the palm.
..

𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗽𝗮𝗹𝗺 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻

Thus, we Catholics need to be more precise nowadays when speaking of ‘Communion on the hand’. Referring merely to ‘Hand Communion’ is too vague. For, what is a hand? The hand consists of the palm and the five digits (the four fingers and the thumb).

Communion from one’s digits never existed anywhere at any time in the Church. Communion from one’s palm to one’s mouth did exist in some places for a few centuries.

Already in the first millennium, in many places Holy Communion directly into the mouth had become the norm. The Church had learnt from experience that it was safer for the Sacred Host, and also more reverent.

But if hand Communion has always meant in reality Communion from one’s palm, not from one’s digits, where does digital Communion come from?

In other words, if hand Communion was ever only palm-to-mouth Communion, who started digits-to-mouth Communion?

𝙃𝙤𝙡𝙮 𝘾𝙝𝙪𝙧𝙘𝙝 𝙙𝙞𝙙 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙞𝙣𝙫𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙙𝙞𝙜𝙞𝙩𝙖𝙡 𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙤𝙣. 𝙅𝙤𝙝𝙣 𝘾𝙖𝙡𝙫𝙞𝙣 𝙙𝙞𝙙.
..

𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗵

Fifty years ago the Catholic Church borrowed this novel rite of digital Communion from the founder of Calvinism. We say this with respect, acknowledging it is nothing personal: we all know fellow Catholics who strive for holiness while abiding by this new rite of Communion, in obedience to their pastors’ preferences, or because they assume that early Christians did so.

Our purpose then is not to pass judgment but to state an historical fact. We should not fear examining it, especially as it pertains to the most sacred reality in the world, that is, the salvific presence of Christ in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar.

𝘼𝙙𝙤𝙥𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘾𝙖𝙡𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙞𝙨𝙩 𝙜𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙖𝙩 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙖 𝙪𝙣𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙢𝙤𝙪𝙨 𝙙𝙚𝙘𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘾𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙡𝙞𝙘 𝘾𝙝𝙪𝙧𝙘𝙝. 𝙊𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙧𝙮, 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙋𝙖𝙪𝙡 𝙋𝙤𝙥𝙚 𝙑𝙄 𝙖𝙨𝙠𝙚𝙙 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙗𝙞𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙥𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙡𝙙 𝙞𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙬𝙞𝙨𝙝𝙚𝙙 𝙙𝙞𝙜𝙞𝙩𝙖𝙡 𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙤 𝙗𝙚 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙙𝙪𝙘𝙚𝙙, 567 𝙨𝙖𝙞𝙙 𝙮𝙚𝙨, 𝙗𝙪𝙩 1233 𝙨𝙖𝙞𝙙 𝙣𝙤.

Thus, two and a half more voted against digital Communion. One wonders how many among those who supported the proposal knew that it was not the rite of antiquity. Had they known, would they have approved it?

This consultation was completed by March 1969 as reported in the Instruction Memoriale Domini, which logically concluded against the innovation: “Therefore, taking into account the remarks and the advice of those whom ‘the Holy Spirit has placed to rule over’ the Churches, in view of the gravity of the matter and the force of the arguments put forward, the Holy Father [Pope Paul VI] has decided not to change the existing way of administering holy communion to the faithful.”

Paradoxically, an annexe to the same document allowed digital Communion where it had been started without permission.

"𝑁𝑜𝑤 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑠𝑡𝑜𝑜𝑑 𝑏𝑦 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝐶𝑟𝑜𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝐽𝑒𝑠𝑢𝑠 𝐻𝑖𝑠 𝑀𝑜𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟."--𝑆𝑡. 𝐽𝑜ℎ𝑛 𝑥𝑖𝑥. 23.

Picture the Mother of Jesus in her early childhood, when, a fair vision of innocence, she rested in the arms of St. Ann; behold her growing up a spotless flower in the Temple of God; contemplate her in the tranquil purity and beauty of her girlhood and the bright hopes it inspired.

And then behold her, a Virgin Mother, sword-pierced in the Temple, a fugitive in a foreign land, a distracted pilgrim seeking her lost Son, the mother of a persecuted, betrayed, and convicted Man, the saddest follower in that sad procession to Calvary, meeting her Son face to face on His way to death, standing by His gibbet, the witness of His ignominy, the sharer of His suffering, the partner in His sorrows, the sentinel by His Cross, the mourner over His co**se, the guardian of His tomb, and learn from her that suffering is the portion of all who follow faithfully in the footsteps of our Lord Jesus Christ and secure His salvation.

For '' Unless you take up the Cross and follow Me you cannot be My disciple."

CONSECRATION TO OUR LADY OF SORROWS

Most holy virgin and queen of martyrs, Mary, would that I could be in heaven, there to contemplate the honours rendered to thee by the most Holy Trinity and by the whole heavenly court! But since I am still a pilgrim in this vale of tears, receive from me, thy unworthy servant and a poor sinner, the most sincere homage and the most perfect act of vassalage a human creature can offer thee.

In thy immaculate heart, pierced with so many swords of sorrow, I place today my poor soul forever; receive me as a partaker in thy dolors, and never suffer that I should depart from that cross on which thy only begotten son expired for me.

With thee, O Mary, I will endure all the sufferings, contradictions, infirmities, with which it will please thy divine son to visit me in this life. All of them I offer to thee, in memory of the dolors which thou didst suffer during thy life, that every thought of my mind, every beating of my heart may henceforward be an act of compassion to thy sorrows, and of complacency for the glory thou now enjoyest in heaven.

Since then, O dear mother, I now compassionate thy dolors, and rejoice in seeing thee glorified, do thou also have compassion on me, and reconcile me to thy son Jesus, that I may become thy true and loyal son (daughter); come on my last day and assist me in my last agony, even as thou wert present at the agony of thy divine son Jesus, that from this painful exile I may go to heaven, there to be made partaker of thy glory.
Amen.

FEAST OF THE SEVEN SORROWS OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

𝘗𝘳𝘢𝘺𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘏𝘰𝘭𝘺 𝘝𝘪𝘳𝘨𝘪𝘯, 𝘖𝘶𝘳 𝘓𝘢𝘥𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘚𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘴

Mary most holy, mother of sorrows, by that intense martyrdom which thou didst suffer at the foot of the cross, during the three hours of Jesus' agony: deign to aid us all, children of thy sorrows, in our last agony, that, by our prayers, we from our bed of death may pass to heaven's holy joys, there to adorn thy crown.

Hail Mary, three times.

Mother of mercy, mother of grace,
Mary, help a fallen race.
Shield us when the foe is nigh,
And receive us when we die.

V. From sudden and unprepared death.
R. Deliver us, O Lord!
V. From the snares of the devil.
R. Deliver us, O Lord!
V. From everlasting death.
R. Deliver us, O Lord!

Let us pray:

God, Who for our salvation hast, in the most bitter death of thy Son, made for us both an example and a refuge: grant, we beseech thee, that, in the last peril, at the hour of our death, we may be made worthy to experience the effect of His great charity, and to be made partakers of the Redeemer's glory. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

O most holy Virgin, Mother of our Lord Jesus Christ: by the overwhelming grief you experienced when you witnessed the martyrdom, the crucifixion, and the death of your divine Son, look upon me with eyes of compassion, and awaken in my heart a tender commiseration for those sufferings, as well as a sincere detestation of my sins, in order that, being disengaged from all undue affection for the passing joys of this earth, I may sigh after the eternal Jerusalem, and that henceforward all my thoughts and all my actions may be directed towards this one most desirable object. Honor, glory, and love to our divine Lord Jesus, and to the holy and immaculate Mother of God. Amen.

SOLEMNITY OF ST. JOSEPH | March 19th

Joseph, the praise and glory of the heavens,
Sure pledge of life, and safety of the wide world,
As in our joy we sing to thee, in kindness
List to our praises.

Thou by the world's Creator wert appointed
Spouse of the Virgin: thee He willed to honor
Naming thee father of the Word, and guardian
Of our salvation.

Thou thy Redeemer, lying in a stable,
Whom long ago foretold the choir of Prophets,
Sawest rejoicing, and thy God adorest
Humble in childhood.

God, King of Kings, and Governor of the ages,
He at whose word the powers of hell do tremble,
He whom the adoring heavens ever worship
Called thee protector.

Praise to the Triune Godhead everlasting,
Who with such honor mightily hath blest thee;
O may he grant us at thy blest petition
Joys everlasting. Amen.

O Joseph, virgin father of Jesus, pure spouse of the Virgin Mary, pray for us daily to the Son of God, that, armed with the weapons of His grace, we may fight as we ought in life, and be crowned by Him in death.

Guardian of virgins, and holy father Joseph, to whose faithful custody Christ Jesus, innocence itself, and Mary, virgin of virgins, were committed; I pray and beseech thee, by these dear pledges, Jesus and Mary, that, being preserved from all uncleanness, I may with spotless mind, pure heart, and chaste body, ever serve Jesus and Mary most chastely all the days of my life. Amen

O Glorious St. Joseph! Model of all those who are devoted to labor, obtain for me the grace to work in a spirit of penance for the expiation of my many sins; to work conscientiously, putting the call of duty above my inclinations; to work with thankfulness and joy, considering it an honor to employ and develop by means of labor the gifts received from God; to work with order, peace, moderation, and patience, never shrinking from weariness and trials; to work, above all, with purity of intention, and with detachment from self, keeping unceasingly before my eyes death and the account I must give of time lost, talents unused, good omitted, and vain complacency in success, so fatal to the work of God.

All for Jesus, all through Mary, all after thy example, O Patriarch Joseph; such shall be my watchword in life and in death. Amen

DO NOT DELAY PRAYING AND FASTING FOR THE SALVATION OF OUR LOVED ONES...LIVING AND DECEASED

"If I had died as a pagan, a heretic, or an apostate, you would have reason indeed to weep. [...] Weep! Weep! Burst into tears, tears of blood! For those are the people who are really dead. [...] It is for such a death that one must shed tears of blood, for those who have not lived as Christians. [...] Let infidels and heretics, let the relatives and the friends of bad Catholics weep without consolation and weep unceasingly for the death of their departed ones!"

PRAYER FOR THE CONVERSION OF SINNERS

O Mary, Mother of Perpetual Help, thou knowest so well the great value of an immortal soul. Thou knowest what it means, that every soul has been redeemed by the Blood of thy Divine Son; thou wilt then not despise my prayer, if I ask from thee the conversion of a sinner, nay, a great sinner who is rapidly hurrying on towards eternal ruin. Thou, O good, merciful Mother, knowest well his irregular life.

Remember, then, that thou art the refuge of sinners, remember that God has given thee power to bring about the conversion of even the most wretched sinners. All that has been done for his soul has been unsuccessful; if thou dost not come to his assistance, he will go from bad to worse.

Obtain for him an effectual grace that he may be moved and brought back to God and his duties. Send him, if necessary, temporal calamities and trials, that he may enter into himself, and put an end to his sinful course.

Thou, O most merciful Mother, hast converted so many sinners at the intercession of their friends. Be moved also by my prayer, and bring this unhappy soul to true conversion of heart. O Mary, help; O Mother of Perpetual Succor, show that thou art the advocate and refuge of sinners. So I hope, so may it be. Amen.
