This first Sunday of August, as we welcome a new month and dive deeper into summer, we will have a guest speaker preaching on how Jesus fed over 5,000 people, the miracle of the five loaves and two fish, as told in Matthew 14. God celebrates our successes and grieves with us in our sufferings. Even in our greatest frustrations, we can trust that God is with us, empowering us with hope, trust, and faith. The Spirit brings freedom from suffering and strength in times of great need, working all things together for good. The seeds of God’s kingdom grow throughout the ages, asking us to reconsider our role as God’s beloved children who are parts of the holy garden of life.

Even when we are blessed, struggles are a reality of life. Even when we are striving to live in the Spirit of God’s love and peace, for many challenges become struggles, sometimes of our own making and sometimes imposed upon us. However, in the struggle, God’s word and Spirit offer guidance. God’s word is the lamp we need in the darkness, the guidance we need on wayward paths, and the hope we need when trouble and despair come calling.

No matter how hard we try, we cannot avoid the pain and trials of life. The psalmist speaks of the trials of faith, as we seek God’s comfort and protection. The book of Genesis highlights the trials of conflicting loyalties, as we struggle to follow God with personal integrity and with loyalty to those we love. The book of Romans illustrates the trials of earthly passions and sinful temptations, even as we aspire to walk with Christ. Yet, amid our pain and fears of abandonment, God is there to rescue us and lead us safely home.

God’s promises are certainly not the world’s promises—they may not produce a fairytale ending, but they do produce a rich and fulfilling life. Join us here at Emmaus UMC to learn more about the promises and faithfulness of God, the life and work of Jesus Christ, and the fulfillment that comes from walking with the Lord.
