Sermon: Honoring Widows | 1 Timothy 5:9–16

What does a life of genuine godliness look like?

As we continue through 1 Timothy, we will consider how genuine godliness is demonstrated in the everyday responsibilities and relationships God has entrusted to us.

Through Paul's instructions concerning widows, we are reminded of the beauty of a life marked by faithfulness—loving our families, showing hospitality, humbly serving others, and caring for those who are suffering.

These are not insignificant things. They are the very places where genuine godliness is put on display.

📖 TOMORROW’S SERMON — 1 TIMOTHY 5:1–2

“Do not rebuke an older man but encourage him as you would a father, younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, in all purity.”

Paul teaches Timothy how to correct and care for people in the church. Older men are to be approached with the respect we would show a father; younger men with the care we would show a brother. Older women are to be treated with honor and tenderness, and younger women as sisters—with all purity.

Correction is sometimes necessary, but it should be given with gentleness, humility, and love, seeking the person’s restoration. The church is God’s household, and our relationships should reflect that.

📖 TODAY’S SERMON — 1 TIMOTHY 4:13–16

“Devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching.”

Paul’s words to Timothy remind us that God’s Word must be central in the life of the church. It is to be read, taught, and pressed upon our hearts and lives. Timothy was also called to persevere in his ministry, keeping watch over his life and teaching for the good of himself and those who heard him.

What does it mean to be a good and faithful servant of Jesus Christ?

Surely every Christian desires to come to the end of this life and hear those wonderful words:

✦ “WELL DONE, GOOD AND FAITHFUL SERVANT.” ✦

In 1 Timothy 4:6–10, Paul shows Timothy what should characterize a good servant of Christ:

A good servant of Christ is saturated with God’s truth, separates from error, and intentionally trains for godliness.

“Train yourself for godliness.”

We understand training when it comes to our bodies, careers, hobbies, and sports. We discipline ourselves and put in the time because we value the goal.

But what about godliness? Are we intentionally training ourselves to become more like Christ?

📖 TOMORROW’S SERMON — 1 TIMOTHY 3:16

“Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness:

- He was manifested in the flesh,
- vindicated by the Spirit,
- seen by angels,
- proclaimed among the nations,
- believed on in the world,
- taken up in glory.”

These six lines remind us that at the center of the Christian faith is a Person:

✦ JESUS CHRIST, THE SON OF GOD ✦

He is the eternal Son of God who came in the flesh to save sinners, was raised from the dead, and is now exalted in glory. This is the Christ whom the church confesses and proclaims to the world.

In justification, God gives every believer:

1. His pardon — our sins are forgiven.
2. Christ's righteousness — His obedience is counted as ours.
3. His verdict — we are accounted and accepted as righteous.
4. His gift of faith — even the faith by which we receive Christ is from God.
5. His Son — faith receives and rests upon Christ alone.
6. His satisfaction — Christ has fully paid our debt and satisfied divine justice.
7. His grace — justification is entirely free, owing nothing to anything in us.
8. His Spirit — Christ is personally applied to us by the Holy Spirit.
9. His continued forgiveness — though we still sin, we never fall from the state of justification.
10. His unchanging promise — sinners have always been justified the same way: by grace through faith in Christ.

WHAT IS THE LOCAL CHURCH?

The local church is a fellowship of believers who have been united to Christ by the Holy Spirit and who voluntarily commit themselves to one another, regularly gathering together under biblical leadership for worship, fellowship, mutual edification, and obedience to God’s Word.

In 1 Timothy 3:15, Paul gives us three important truths about the identity and responsibility of this gathered body:

🏠 GOD’S HOUSEHOLD — HIS FAMILY

As brothers and sisters in Christ, Christians are called to know and care for one another, pray for one another, bear one another’s burdens, encourage one another, and remain committed to one another.

⛪ THE CHURCH OF THE LIVING GOD

We belong to and gather before the God who is alive and actively at work among His people through His Word and Spirit.

đź“– THE PILLAR AND SUPPORT OF THE TRUTH

The church is not free to invent, redefine, or change the truth. Truth belongs to God, and He has given us His truth in His Word. As those entrusted with God’s Word, Christians are called to support, preserve, proclaim, and display His truth before the world.

Because of what the church is, our commitment to the local church should never be casual. Belonging to a local church is a serious commitment before God-to His people, His worship, and His truth.
