A Welcome Sign
Psalm 66:5 & 16
Come and see what God has done: he is awesome in his deeds toward the children of man. … Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will tell what he has done for my soul.
Imagine placing a sign in your front lawn with an arrow pointed toward your front door that read, “Come on inside and see what God has done for me!” Imagine making your home a museum of divine blessings, with pictures covering the wall from hard days spent in a hospital room or at a funeral home or at a graveside or at the site of the car wreck on the back road, side by side with pictures of what God did even through those challenges—pictures of the nurse who accepted Jesus and the farmer who pulled you out of the ditch because he happened to be going down that road at exactly the same time and the testimony of the deceased family member who is now joyfully resting in the arms of Jesus. I wonder, friend: when the HVAC repairman goes through your house to fix air flow, what testaments to God’s goodness does he pass along the way? When the mechanic at the car shop takes your car for a test drive to assess the clicking sound, what mementos does he see on the dashboard and the front seat that herald God’s provision?
Let’s make it even more practical though. Let’s go beyond the gospel tract in our dashboard and the worship CD in our CD player and the decorative cross and calligraphy Scripture verses hanging on our walls. May the contentment in our demeanor tell the story to others, especially when we’re stressed out and undergoing a hard day at the office. I wonder, friend: if an unbeliever were to quietly shadow you today as you go about your routines, watch how you speak to your spouse and your kids, watch how you spend your time on the phone, watch how you talk to your co-workers and the guy at the fast-food restaurant, and watch how you live from moment to moment, would they learn anything about God’s goodness? Would they walk away from a day in your life saying, “Wow, I need to see more!”, or would they say, “Wow, enough of that!”
