Your Part

In the Bible, how many times did God miraculously part foreboding waters for His people to cross over safely on dry ground?

Not once, not twice, not even thrice, but four times!

1. The Red Sea (Exodus 14): Moses raises his staff while the people stand still; God drives back the sea with a strong east wind; they pass through on dry ground; and God destroys their vicious pursuers. A doorway from bo***ge into freedom, showing that God’s power can overturn the very thing that appears insurmountable.

2. The Jordan River (at flood stage, Joshua 3): The priests bearing the Ark step into the overflow (NOT standing still, this time the first action is a step of faith), and THEN the waters stop; and the people cross into the Promised Land on dry ground. A border-crossing that seals a long-awaited covenant promise and confirms God’s faithfulness.

3. Elijah at the Jordan (2 Kings 2:8): Elijah parts the waters with his cloak, crossing with Elisha, his God-anointed protege. A symbol of prophetic transition—one generation inspiring and handing off divine leadership to the next—and God’s constant faithfulness.

4. Elisha at the Jordan (2 Kings 2:14): With his mentor Elijah now gone, Elisha repeats the miracle, striking the waters with Elijah’s cloak, and crossing back over alone and into his ministry. A reaffirmation that God’s power remains at work through the next willing servant.

Press into the truth that God’s power is not only displayed in ancient stories. They’re patterns of God meeting His people at the edge of impossibility—delivering, guiding, and reaffirming His presence, demonstrating His mastery over creation and His commitment to His beloved. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and He longs for you to trust Him to make a way where there seems to be no way.

He is always and forever the God of His Word. Hear His invitation to trust Him again.

Return to the Curse

"Are you so foolish? After beginning by means of the Spirit, are you now trying to finish by means of the flesh?" (Gal. 3:3)

There is a quiet temptation that follows every believer: the draw to return to what Christ already took away. Paul saw it in the early church. People who had begun their journey by the Spirit through faith were drifting back toward old systems, old securities, and old ways of proving themselves (or approving of themselves). He names this drift for what it truly is—a return to the curse.

The curse of the Law wasn’t that the Law was bad. It was that the Law demanded perfection from imperfect people. To step back under it was to step back into a life where one’s standing with God rose and fell based on performance. Jesus came to end that exhausting cycle.

"Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us." (Gal. 3:13)

So why in the world would we want to take it on again?

Yet the human heart often reaches for old chains. We revert to self‑reliance. We measure ourselves by failures versus successes. We try to earn what has already been paid for and bestowed to us. We cannot purchase again something that has already been bought. Once purchased, it belongs to the Purchaser. “You were bought at a price“ (1 Cor. 6:20).

Paul’s warning is gentle but firm: Don’t step back into what Christ freed you from. Don’t rebuild what Jesus tore down. Don’t gravitate toward shadow when He has brought you into Light.

"Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom." (1 Cor. 3:17)

To live by the Spirit is to live free—free to love and grow, free to walk with God as both Father and Friend, without fear. Freedom doesn’t mean perfection; it means belonging—because of Christ’s righteousness, not ours. This is the ground beneath our feet, the anchor to our soul.

Christ didn’t redeem you halfway and expect you to fulfill the remainder of the requirement.

Seven Sneezes

There are such INTRIGUING things in Scripture!

Elisha, soon after taking on the mantle of prophetic calling and a double portion of his mentor Elijah’s spirit of faith, he parts the river by slapping the water with Elijah’s cloak—just as he saw Elijah do—crosses on dry ground and begins his journey as a prophet appointed by God. As he journeys, God empowers him for numerous unique, natural-law-defying miracles, one right after the other. In Jericho he discovers that crops are failing and the water is tainted, so he tosses a bowl of salt into the water, and God purifies the water, never to cause harm again. And there is the bottomless jar of olive oil granted to a poor widow needing to redeem her two sons taken captive to pay a debt. So many miracles, each of which, alone, merits contemplation; but I find this particular story curiously fascinating.

In 2 Kings 4, Elisha eventually arrives in Shunem where he meets a new friend, a well-to-do woman who granted food and lodging any time he traveled through. “What can be done for her?” Elisha asked. [His servant] Gehazi said, “She has no son, and her husband is old” (v. 14). Elisha promises her a son within the year, and it happens. But as the boy grew older, while in the field with his father, he is overcome with a splitting headache which kills him by noon while in his mother’s lap. She lays her dead son on Elisha’s guest bed and chases down Elisha at Mount Carmel to plead with him. He returns home with her.

"When Elisha reached the house, there was the boy lying dead on his couch. He went in, shut the door on the two of them and prayed to the Lord. Then he got on the bed and lay on the boy, mouth to mouth, eyes to eyes, hands to hands. As he stretched himself out on him, the boy’s body grew warm. Elisha turned away and walked back and forth in the room and then got on the bed and stretched out on him once more. The boy sneezed seven times and opened his eyes." (vv. 32-35)

Why did our Lord see fit to include these 7 sneezes in this holy account?

To be certain I’ll ask Him when I get to heaven, but I believe that 7 is God’s favorite number. If you’ve studied biblical numerology, you know that 3 represents the Trinity, completeness, and unity, while 4 denotes all of creation, completion, and order. And 3 plus 4 equals 7, which represents what I like to call “complete completeness,” and it is considered a perfect numeral. Just think of all the 7s in the Bible: 7 days of creation, Sabbath on day 7, 49-year Jubilee cycle, forgive 70 times 7, 7 spirits of God, 7 seals, 7 trumpets, and many more.

When God breathes into you His Holy Spirit, and rescues you from death to life in Christ, your resurrection is perfectly completely complete. Go ahead, take a deep breath and sneeze seven times to celebrate!

Rise Again

"Then a cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud: 'This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!' Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus." (Mark 9:7-8)

Immediately after the amazing holy transfiguration, as they were descending the mountain, Jesus warns the three—Peter, James, and John—not to tell anyone about what they’d just witnessed “until after the Son of Man rises again” (Matt. 17:9; Mark 9:9). But they did not understand, and they “kept it to themselves“ questioning what “rise again” meant.

Just before (previous chapter), right after Peter’s great confession…
"He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again." (Mark 8: 31)
…and Peter rebuked Jesus.

Not long after the transfiguration (same chapter), He was teaching his disciples privately:
"He said to them, 'The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men. They will kill him, and after three days he will rise.' But they did not understand what he meant and were afraid to ask him about it." (vv. 31-32)

And again:
"Jesus took the Twelve aside and told them, 'We are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written by the prophets about the Son of Man will be fulfilled. He will be delivered over to the Gentiles. They will mock him, insult him and spit on him; they will flog him and kill him. On the third day he will rise again.' The disciples did not understand any of this. Its meaning was hidden from them, and they did not know what he was talking about." (Luke 18:31-34)

Wait! What? How could this be? Jesus had informed them more than once, very directly, clearly describing that He would be killed and would rise again on the third day. These disciples had witnessed miracle after miracle, including Jesus’ raising of the widow’s dead son of Nain (Luke 7:11-17) and Jairus’ dead daughter (Mark 5:21-43) and His dead friend, Lazarus of Bethany (John 11:1–44).

Somehow they were still struggling to comprehend that Messiah had ultimate power over death, not just of others, but of His own, conquering death once and forever for all who would believe.

Beginning on the third day through the day of Pentecost, they came to understand completely.

12 Plus 12

"It had a great, high wall with twelve gates, and with twelve angels at the gates. On the gates were written the names of the twelve tribes of Israel. There were three gates on the east, three on the north, three on the south and three on the west. The wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb." (Rev. 21:12-14)

Intriguing construction of the magnificent Holy City. The bride. The new Jerusalem. Beautifully written words describing John’s God-given heavenly visit: the ultimate best he could derive from indescribable things revealed. This scripture morsel captivated me recently. What meaning can we derive from it if, in fact, this is humanly possible?

The twelve gates plus the twelve foundations: His first covenant people and the people of His first church, new covenant. The chosen. Jehovah’s favored.

As a side note, in biblical numerology the number 12—one of God’s favorite numbers— holds profound significance, symbolizing divine order, completeness, and authority. Notice how this aligns with earlier verse six when “He who was seated on the throne…said to me: ‘It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End.’”

It is finished.

Thus, the new song:
"Because you [Christ] were slain, and with your blood you purchased for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation. You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth." (Rev. 5:9-10)

Conclusion: If you have confessed, and professed Jesus as Lord, then you are a welcome member of that same elect group.

"Then I saw 'a new heaven and a new earth,' for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, 'Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. "He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death" or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.'” (Rev. 21:1-4)

In fact, you are already there (Eph. 2:6).

The miracles of God never cease to intrigue and amaze. Whether from the Old Testament, New Testament, or modern day, I stand in awe of The Almighty’s Sovereign Hand when He moves.

I recently revisited Israel’s exodus story illuminating numerous and profound, back-to-back miracles displaying His glory to mankind. Rods transforming into snakes; a suddenly leprous hand suddenly clean again; plagues debunking all Egyptian gods; Red Sea parting with red carpet, dry-land pavement; manna from heaven and quail-winds; water from rocks…. The list is incredible, but so very powerful in demonstrating Jehovah’s love, protection, and promise fulfillment.

One instance, in particular, struck me recently—that pillar that led them: Was it a cloud or a fire-mast? Yes. But this time it moves from the front to the back and takes on a different transformation, becoming a barrier between Israel and the quickly-pursuing “Egyptians—all Pharaoh’s horses and chariots, horsemen and troops” (Exod. 14:9).

"Then the angel of God, who had been traveling in front of Israel’s army, withdrew and went behind them. The pillar of cloud also moved from in front and stood behind them, coming between the armies of Egypt and Israel. Throughout the night the cloud brought darkness to the one side and light to the other side; so neither went near the other all night long." (vv.19-20)

Imagine being in bright, fiery “daylight” looking back over your shoulder and seeing a black wall of night, so dark that the Egyptians were paralyzed from moving forward while all “six hundred thousand men on foot, besides women and children” (12:37), passed over to the other side.

"During the last watch of the night the Lord looked down from the pillar of fire and cloud at the Egyptian army and threw it into confusion. He jammed the wheels of their chariots so that they had difficulty driving. And the Egyptians said, 'Let’s get away from the Israelites! The Lord is fighting for them against Egypt.'” (14: 24-25)

Too late. …And YOU know the rest of the story: Egyptians and Egyptian horses can’t swim. “Not one of them survived” (v. 28).

Darkness and evil have NO chance against God’s Light and holiness.

Swallowed Up

Have you ever been swallowed up? So engulfed by a particular difficulty, thinking you have no way out? You're doomed. Likely going to die.

Jonah felt this way. But in a deeper sense than probably you ever have. And I mean deeper in the deep, inside the belly of a large fish. Imagine what it would be like to spend three days and three nights deep in the cold ocean, but still breathing somehow, because your nose found a small pocket of air amidst all the digesting sludge in the stomach encasing you. Talk about smelling fishy!

While this is a whale of a tale and hard to believe, it is the true story of a prophet of the Most High God. A man called to preach and to serve. One who argued with God and literally ran as far away as possible from the assignment. When his disobedience threatened the lives of many others, caught in a raging storm on the seas, he knew. Convicted. The only chance to spare their lives was for them to—at his own instruction—cast him overboard. Dumped like waste, sloughed like chum for the sharks. “And the raging sea grew calm” (Jonah 1:15).

Doomed. Likely going to die. Sinking deeper, to the roots of the mountains with seaweed wrapped around his head (2:5-6). Countdown to holding breath. But suddenly scooped up in one large gush of a swallow, and now in a slimy cocoon…with an air pocket. What a way to die—to be digested ever so slowly inside this creature submarining to and fro, to who knows where! And what does he do when he gains some sense of cognition? What would you do?

“From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the Lord his God” (Jonah 2:1). I wonder how long it took him to realize God was sparing his life rather than taking it? He repents and relents.

“When my life was ebbing away, I remembered you, Lord, and my prayer rose to you, to your holy temple. Those who cling to worthless idols turn away from God’s love for them. But I, with shouts of grateful praise, will sacrifice to you. What I have vowed I will make good. I will say, ‘Salvation comes from the Lord.’”

"And the Lord commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land." (Jonah 2:7-10)

Perhaps what you are swallowed up by is rather an uncomfortable but necessary journey to your deliverance and obedience?

Starstruck Maneuvering Magi

They journeyed far, captivated by a brilliant star, following it to Bethlehem.

Where in the East did they come from, and who were they?

Many scholars suggest they were likely from Persia, known for its astrologers and wise men. The term "Magi" is from an old Persian word, referring to a priestly caste in Zoroastrianism prevalent in Persia. As in this image (Three Magi, Byzantine mosaic, c. 565), historical art usually depicts them in Persian clothing (breeches, capes, and Phrygian caps). Other ancient traditions imply they came from Babylon, also famous for astrology, or from Arabia because gold, frankincense, and myrrh were associated with trade routes that passed through this area.

Their names, origins, and number are unmentioned in Scripture, but the “three” assumption corresponds to the gifts bestowed. Their gifts also carry deep symbolism: gold = royalty, frankincense = divinity, and myrrh foreshadows suffering and death.

But they were not Jews! So how did they conclude that this nova’s appearance—as they shared with Herod (Matt. 2:2)—signified the fulfillment of a holy prophecy: “the one born king of the Jews”? They even quoted the Micah 5:2,4 prophecy! They weren’t just star-chasing. They knew precisely Whom they were seeking. Did you also notice they called it “his star”?

By the way, unlike many Christmas card portrayals, Jesus wasn’t a babe lying in a manger when they arrived. He was a “child” and they worshiped Him in His house not a stable (v.11).

They were most definitely wise men: Having been warned in a dream (imagine that!), they outmaneuvered Herod who was hellbent on assassinating this new King.

The Magi's journey symbolizes the early recognition of Jesus as Messiah by Gentiles, emphasizing the universal significance of His birth and foreshadowing the Great Commission for “all nations” (Matthew 28:19). But how did they know?

"For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse." (Rom. 1:20)

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16)

Still to this day, visions, dreams, and prophecies are calling unto Christ people from all over the world.

Famous Last Words

Not only is John a devoted follower, but he is also an especially close friend of Jesus during His life on earth. We deduce this because John addresses himself as “the disciple whom Jesus loved;” he is the one leaning against Jesus’ chest at the last supper; and because it is John to whom Jesus entrusts the care of His mother Mary as His dying last will.

After the resurrection, Jesus appears at sunrise on the shores of the beautiful Sea of Galilee. I imagine Him standing, quietly watching as Peter’s fishing boat appears in the distance heading toward shore. After a long night of fishing, Peter and six other disciples—including John—have nothing but empty, callused hands to show for it. Jesus calls to them and invites them to cast nets once more, but on the right side of the boat. Something seems eerily familiar…John recognizes Jesus first... Peter dives into the water to swim as fast as he can to shore…another boatload-of-fish miracle.

Jesus stoops to turn the fish and flip the bread grilling over fiery coals. What a beautiful way to end the gospel book of John! The resurrected Christ, King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Sovereign of Sovereigns, kneeling and cooking breakfast for His tired and hungry…and now very excited friends. It is here that Jesus publicly redeems back Peter’s three public denials by asking for his three public confessions of believing love, commissioning him to feed the flock moving forward.

Peter receives the commission and gets a lot of attention here. And then—so, so much like Peter—he wants to know what John gets out of the deal, knowing that he is also a favorite. “Lord, what about him?”

And Jesus’ famous last words, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me” (John 21: 22).

You alone must choose whether to follow Christ. It’s no one’s matter but yours. Jesus is an INDIVIDUAL Savior. Like Peter, like John, you’re His favorite. It’s personal. So personal that every soul’s story is unique, and so personal that He’d be willing to kneel and cook YOU breakfast, too.

Expecting Something?

"The Lord is good to those who wait hopefully and expectantly for Him, to those who seek Him." (Lam. 3:25, AMPC)

"I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord." (Ps. 27:13-14)

Remain confident. Wait for the Lord. (Not sure about you, but I don’t find this easy.)

Guess what? There is no such thing as confident hope without the waiting. Waiting is not passive, but a forward-leaning assurance that God will act.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jer. 29:11)

Does this mean we will not suffer or have difficulties? Not at all! Keep in mind that this was a declaration to God’s people while held captive in Babylon, and He tells them His promise to bring them back home to Jerusalem was to be fulfilled yet 70 years ahead.

"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." (Rom. 8:28)

All things—not just pleasant things—are woven by God toward good purposes for His beloved. So how do we remain assured in the waiting and the striving? Expect.

Expectation is an expression of trust. This is not wishful thinking, but confidence in God’s faithfulness. To anticipate good from God is to respect Him as trustworthy—the opposite of anxiety-prone worrying and fear-based living.

Practicing gratitude by remembering God’s past deliverances strengthens expectation of future victories. This pregnant hope is an anchor to our soul, especially when times get tough. However, His miracle or blessing may manifest in unexpected ways, usually beyond what we were expecting, because He “is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us” (Eph. 3:20). We should expect not just enough, but abundance!

…So how big is your imagination? How far-reaching are your prayers? Perhaps you, like me, need to turn up your “expecter.”

"Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows." (James 1:17)

Are you asking, seeking, knocking, and fully expecting?

"Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." (Phil 1:6)

Too Bad So Sad

To someone who thinks you've been too bad to come to Jesus: The price He paid is bigger than any mess you've made! Need proof?

"What do you think? If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go to look for the one that wandered off? And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he is happier about that one sheep than about the ninety-nine that did not wander off. In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that ANY of these little ones should perish." (Matt. 18:12-14)

"But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting ANYONE to perish, but everyone to come to repentance." (2 Pet. 3:8-10)

"But if a wicked person turns away from all the sins they have committed and keeps all my decrees and does what is just and right, that person will surely live; they will not die. None of the offenses they have committed will be remembered against them. Because of the righteous things they have done, they will live. Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked? declares the Sovereign Lord. Rather, am I not pleased when they turn from their ways and live?" (Ezek. 18:21-23)

Consider adulterous murderer, King David; persecuting murderer, Saul of Tarsus; adulterous Samaritan woman at the well…the woman caught and thrown at the feet of Jesus for stoning; the thief on the cross…and yes, even you.

"Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow… Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me…Restore to me the joy of your salvation." (Ps. 51:7, 10, 12)

The Blood of Christ cleanses completely. Paid. Done. Finished. Fresh again every morning.

No matter what is occurring in your life or happening in this chaotic world, you have the option of experiencing inexpressible joy!

Take Habakkuk, for example.
"O Lord, how long shall I cry for help, and you will not hear? Or cry to you “Violence!” and you will not save? Why do you make me see iniquity, and why do you idly look at wrong? Destruction and violence are before me; strife and contention arise. So the law is paralyzed, and justice never goes forth. For the wicked surround the righteous; so justice goes forth perverted." (Hab. 1:2-4, ESV).

Circumstances and perceptions sound familiar to you?

The Lord’s answer to this prophet’s prayer outcry? “Look among the nations, and see: wonder and be astounded. For I am doing a work in your days that you would not believe if told” (v. 5). This sounds hopeful, right? Not so in the short term. Later we learn that this work of God was to be a terrifying period of enduring great trouble for the purpose of cleansing evil (such as was the prophecy to Noah of the great flood.) See Habakkuk 2 for this dreadful revelation which concludes in a win: [All idols, whether wine or silent stone image, are without speech or teaching], “but the Lord is in his holy temple; let all the earth keep silence before Him” (Hab. 2:20).

Habakkuk’s prayer response to God’s answer (chapter 3, a worthy read!) ends like this:
"Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food, the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will take joy in the God of my salvation. God, the Lord, is my strength; he makes my feet like the deer’s; he makes me tread on the high places." (Hab. 3:17-19)

Make no mistake, someday evil will be judged in Truth once and for all, and God’s holy justice will forever prevail. “For he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness, and the peoples in his faithfulness” (Ps. 96:13b). There is an appointed time and an appointed people. As prophesied of the end times in His Word, it will get ugly; but as a follower of Christ, you have nothing to fear, and His Spirit can grant you supernatural joy and strength to “walk the high road” through it. His promises are true; His love for you never fails; and His purpose for you is real. The fact that you were born into this generation is not a random occurrence or God’s Plan B for your life. You were appointed for such a time as this. Therefore, rise up and shine into the surrounding darkness for His glory and be joyful! Do what you were created for.

"For still the vision awaits its appointed time; it hastens to the end—it will not lie. If it seems slow, wait for it: it will surely come; it will not delay." (Hab. 2:3)
