Happy 4th anniversary . I could have chosen “staged” pictures, but I wanted to celebrate our real life and some of the reasons I love you instead!

1. You are so fun. You wanted to make your niece smile, so you “dressed up” like a chicken.
2. The children in our life adore you.
3. You are a servant… and are always willing to carry all the things.
4. You are brilliant.
5. You are a safe place for those you love.
6. You are intentional to love the things I love.
7. The pups love you!
8. I love the way you look at me.
9. You insist that we do life together. You refused to tour Fenway Park without me so you pushed me in a wheelchair (a week after knee surgery), so that we could see it together.

We set up a desk in our dining room for me to use on the days when I don’t feel well enough to go up and down the stairs to my office. It has been a great help… and the pups approve.

I haven’t been feeling very well this week, so I set up a “dissertation station” on our kitchen island so that I don’t have to go upstairs to my office to work. Thankfully, my study buddies keep me company 😂.

I can tell the second I see her eyes if she will know me. You see, dementia is mean like that. One day it’s so clear that she recognizes me… and then there are days when I can see her confusion. Her eyes give it away every time.

Thankfully, she usually lights up and smiles the second she sees me. But the days I don’t get that reaction, my heart breaks. My husband, Randall, can always tell when there is a hard day with Mom. My eyes give it away. We have that in common.

This season is hard. Honestly, caring for my mom is one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, BUT I wouldn’t trade this time with her for anything. I hope and pray that I can love her a fraction of how she continues to love me.

She doesn’t call me by my name anymore, and she often thinks I am her sister. But she always knows that I am HERS. She excitingly tells me, “you are MINE!”

That phrase reminds me of the Gospel. There are days when I forget God’s love for me. I forget that He provides. I forget that nothing on this earth will satisfy me. But when I forget, because of Jesus, God lovingly proclaims, “you are MINE!” Mom has always been a visible representation of God’s love to me… and she continues to point me to the Gospel… even as her dementia progresses. For these moments, I am thankful.

I moved my “dissertation station” from my office to the kitchen island. Sometimes, you just need a change of scenery.
