For those of you who are going through a hard time this Christmas season, here's another meaningful poem that was shared yesterday in the church service.
A Prayer of One Struggling During the Advent Season
by Laura Rohrer
They say Advent is the season for joy –
Then why does my heart feel so barren?
Families gather –
Mine is broken. Fragmented.
Festive music that was meant to stir
Joy and Peace
Just stirs an aching loneliness in me.
The story of the Christ-child
Born in a stable –
Come to be King and heralded
By Angels –
Why can’t my soul respond
To what my mind knows must be
Good news?
I reach out to You, Lord God,
The Father or Our Lord Jesus Christ
Whom I long to worship with joy.
If You are “the God Who Sees”
Why do I feel unseen? Unknown?
Will You help me to receive You into
My pain and loneliness?
Will You receive my words of lament
And hear my complaint?
Sometimes the only worship I have
Is to pour out my fear and grief
In honest words and groans.
When I cannot sense Your presence
Will You come looking for me,
And search until You find me?
Like the Shepherd who left the ninety-nine
For the one lost sheep?
Like the woman who looked
For her one lost coin
Until she found it?
Will You hear my groaning
And groan wordlessly with me?
Like Simeon of old, waiting in the temple
For the consolation of Israel,
I am waiting for You.
I am waiting for your promise
That by Your tender mercy,
The Sunrise from on high will visit us;
Will visit me.
To give light to those who sit in darkness
And in the shadow of death,
To guide our feet into the way of peace.
O Lord God, even while I cannot yet sense You
I open my heart to the promise
that Your light has come
For me.
In the Name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.
