For those of you who are going through a hard time this Christmas season, here's another meaningful poem that was shared yesterday in the church service.

A Prayer of One Struggling During the Advent Season
by Laura Rohrer

They say Advent is the season for joy –
Then why does my heart feel so barren?
Families gather –
Mine is broken. Fragmented.
Festive music that was meant to stir
Joy and Peace
Just stirs an aching loneliness in me.

The story of the Christ-child
Born in a stable –
Come to be King and heralded
By Angels –
Why can’t my soul respond
To what my mind knows must be
Good news?

I reach out to You, Lord God,
The Father or Our Lord Jesus Christ
Whom I long to worship with joy.

If You are “the God Who Sees”
Why do I feel unseen? Unknown?
Will You help me to receive You into
My pain and loneliness?
Will You receive my words of lament
And hear my complaint?
Sometimes the only worship I have
Is to pour out my fear and grief
In honest words and groans.

When I cannot sense Your presence
Will You come looking for me,
And search until You find me?
Like the Shepherd who left the ninety-nine
For the one lost sheep?
Like the woman who looked
For her one lost coin
Until she found it?

Will You hear my groaning
And groan wordlessly with me?
Like Simeon of old, waiting in the temple
For the consolation of Israel,
I am waiting for You.

I am waiting for your promise
That by Your tender mercy,
The Sunrise from on high will visit us;
Will visit me.
To give light to those who sit in darkness
And in the shadow of death,
To guide our feet into the way of peace.

O Lord God, even while I cannot yet sense You
I open my heart to the promise
that Your light has come
For me.

In the Name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.

This beautiful poem was shared today in our church service.

A Prayer for Those Near to Someone Suffering
by Amanda Campati

Our God who draws near to the broken-hearted,
be with us as we draw near to those suffering this season—
with depression, anxiety, loneliness, grief,
or an addiction that won’t relent.

It is painful to watch those we love suffer so much.
In our fear, anxiety, or helplessness
we sometimes rush to fix what cannot be fixed,
or retreat to avoid our own discomfort.
Neither response is helpful.
Driven by fear instead of love,
we fail to see Your image in front of us
and may miss the miracle of God in our midst.

Forgive us. Teach us the way of Jesus—
who was always moved by love instead of fear;
who never treated others as objects to fix,
but as people to be loved;
who could set boundaries in love,
yet whose love knew no bounds.

Expand our imagination
for what Your love looks like in our relationships.
Grant us courage and grace to follow in Your way,
and in doing so, help us discover again
the miracle of God in our midst.

When we don’t know what to say or do,
remind us that caring presence is remembered most.
When the wounds before us are beyond our power to
heal,
remind us that the burden of healing and salvation
is Yours alone to bear.

When we are heavy with our own grief,
or feel alone in the experience
of loving someone with mental illness,
surround us with companions for the journey—
those who sustain, encourage,
and offer safe presence and wisdom.
May the grace of Jesus find us and give us rest.

As we offer care to those we love,
may our own weakness not be forgotten,
that we might never lose sight
of our own deep need for You.

In all these things,
grant us the gift of experiencing
the miracle of God with us this season.

Hey there! If you've been with us on Sundays, you know that we are on a journey to read through the entire Bible together over the next 2 years (something we are very excited about!).

We've got some upcoming workshops where we'll be exploring different ways of engaging the Scriptures. Our first one is coming up this Saturday (Jan 18) at 9a in the church Fellowship Hall. We hope to see you there!

Side note: check for a link in the comments of this post if you're curious to find out more about our vision + plan for reading through Scripture together!
