The Gospels were not written merely to provide information about Jesus; they call us to follow Him. In this final lesson, we bring the course together through the themes of discipleship, worship, prayer, kingdom community, and mission. We consider the call and cost of discipleship, the Great Commandments, dependence on God, the church’s identity, and the worldwide task of the Great Commission. We also explore kingdom ethics in daily life, perseverance through suffering, and the Christian hope centered on Christ’s return. The proper response to the Gospel is more than intellectual agreement. Jesus calls His people to follow, worship, serve, and proclaim Him. Lesson 13: The Gospel of John and the Synoptic Tradition

The Gospel of John sounds and moves differently from Matthew, Mark, and Luke, but difference does not automatically mean contradiction. This lesson explores John’s distinctive chronology, extended discourses, selected signs, and explicit claims about Jesus' identity. We examine archaeological and geographical details that illuminate John’s historical setting, the seven major “I Am” sayings, and the Gospel’s high Christology of preexistence, incarnation, divine Sonship, and unity with the Father. We also consider the Beloved Disciple, eyewitness testimony, faith, eternal life, revelation, and glory. Read alongside the Synoptic Gospels, John offers an independent and complementary witness. Together, the four Evangelists proclaim one Christ: the Messiah, the Son of God, the Word made flesh, and the Savior of the world.

Lesson 12: The Synoptic Problem: Mark, Q, and Alternative Models

Matthew, Mark, and Luke often share wording, order, and episodes, yet each Gospel also preserves distinctive material. How should these similarities and differences be explained? This lesson introduces the Synoptic Problem and distinguishes among the triple tradition, the double tradition, and material unique to Matthew or Luke. We examine the case for Markan priority, the Two-Source and Four-Source hypotheses, and the proposed sayings source, Q. We also evaluate important alternatives, including the Farrer and Griesbach hypotheses. Rather than treating one theory as unquestionable, this lesson models careful comparison of the evidence. Literary relationships among the Gospels need not weaken their reliability or inspiration; they can help us appreciate the evangelists as faithful witnesses and purposeful authors.

Historical study can illuminate the world of Jesus, but it cannot reduce Him to a reconstruction shaped by modern assumptions. Lesson 5: Baptism and Temptation: The Faithful Son Tested

Why was the sinless Jesus baptized, and why did His public ministry begin with testing in the wilderness? This lesson explores Jesus’ baptism as identification with humanity, obedience to the Father, messianic consecration, and anticipation of the cross. The Father’s voice, the Son in the water, and the descending Spirit reveal the Trinitarian shape of Jesus’ mission and draw Psalm 2 and Isaiah 42 together. In the wilderness, Jesus succeeds where Adam and Israel failed. He refuses to use His identity for self-serving power and answers every temptation with faithful obedience to Scripture. Together, the baptism and temptation reveal the kind of Messiah Jesus will be: the beloved Son who trusts the Father and remains faithful on the road to the cross.
