Love Like Jesus Even When You Are Hurt

Key Scripture:
“But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you.” — Matthew 5:44 (NKJV)

One of the greatest challenges for every believer is to love those who have mistreated us. It is easy to love people who love us, but Jesus calls us to a higher standard. He calls us to love like He loves.

Jesus demonstrated this love on the cross. Even while being mocked, beaten, and crucified, He prayed for His enemies:

“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.” — Luke 23:34 (NKJV)

When people betray us, speak against us, reject us, or treat us unfairly, our natural reaction is often anger or revenge. However, the Holy Spirit empowers us to respond differently. Loving our enemies does not mean approving of their wrongdoing; it means choosing God’s way over bitterness.

Why Should We Love Our Enemies?

1. We Reflect the Character of God
“That you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good.” — Matthew 5:45 (NKJV)

God shows kindness even to those who reject Him. As His children, we are called to reflect His nature.

2. Love Overcomes Evil
“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” — Romans 12:21 (NKJV)

Responding with love breaks the cycle of hatred and allows God’s power to work through us.

3. Forgiveness Frees Our Hearts
“Bearing with one another, and forgiving one another… even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.” — Colossians 3:13 (NKJV)

Holding on to offense keeps us in bo***ge, but forgiveness brings freedom and peace.

4. Love Is the Mark of True Discipleship
“By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” — John 13:35 (NKJV)

Our love, especially toward difficult people, reveals Christ to the world.

Remember, loving your enemies is not a sign of weakness—it is a demonstration of God’s strength working through you. When you love like Jesus, you shine His light in a dark world and become a living testimony of His grace.
