Concord Cemetery: John Gann monument-missing piece

John Gann's monument is missing one of the 5 pieces that make up the obelisk marking his grave in Concord Cemetery. The piece that is missing is the center stone with "Gann" carved on it. He was one of Cobb county's pioneer settlers and served the county as both a state representative and state senator. To see the piece that is missing, see the pictures below. A special thanks to the Smyrna Museum for the black and white picture of his marker. If you know of the location of the missing piece, please e-mail [email protected]

Cemetery Maintenance Tip: To keep from damaging headstones while mowing a cemetery use only a push mower. Zip-tie pool noodles or pipe insulation to the mower deck on the sides, front, and rear to act as bumpers. Keep at least 12 inches from the headstones. Finish by trimming the grass next to the headstone using hand trimmers. If a string trimmer is used it must have line that is no heavier than 0.09 in.

Neglected Cemetery: Concord Cemetery, established in 1837. The cemetery is located at the end of Fowler Rd. next to the Silver Comet Trail. This was the location of the 2nd and 3rd church buildings of the Concord Baptist Church. These buildings were erected in 1833 and 1842 respectively. The 3rd building was left useless during the Civil War. This property is currently part of Cobb County's Heritage Park. The cemetery has been fenced in, but many of the headstones are missing and all but 2 have been toppled over earlier by vandals. This cemetery is in need of mapping all graves and resetting of the remaining headstones.
