Parched

It’s been a long, dry summer here in Texas. Temperatures have been soaring and there has not been a rain cloud in sight for weeks! While we wait patiently (kind of) for the cooler weather to come, we also pray Mother Nature will bless us with some rain!

As I watered my plants this morning, I was reminded how beneficial rain really is:

Expanding your territory

In the Old Testament days, Joshua was dividing the Promised Land amongst the twelve tribes. The tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh, Joseph’s sons, felt they should have more land than they currently had to accommodate all of the people in their tribes. Joshua agreed to extend their territory up into the mountain region.

The mountain region was wooded and uncivilized so, naturally, the tribes protested. But Joshua was firm in his decision and told them that because they were a great and powerful nation, they would be able to clear the wooded area and claim the land as far as their eyes could see. In the end the tribes chose not to clear the woodlands and took up residence in the small, cramped area that was already familiar.

Storm ALERT

I remember evenings spent with my mom and sister during storms when I was a child. We’d gather in the living room, sing songs and play games until the storm passed. Even though the wind and rain blew against the house, we were safe and protected inside.

The disciples recalled the story of a storm on the Sea of Galilee. However they were not nostalgic, they told of a time they were terrified, didn’t trust God (Jesus was literally with them), and thought they would surely die!

Be Magnified

Have you ever looked at yourself in a lighted, magnified mirror? There is no escaping the proof of every flaw, every blemish, every imperfection. As Truvy Jones in Steel Magnolias eloquently stated, “Time marches on and sooner or later you realize it is marchin’ across your face.” The harsh light and magnification make it impossible for flaws to escape, leaving us focusing on the negative.
