Parents, Let's Have a Midterm Check-In
Much of parenting’s day-to-day rhythm leaves us feeling like we’re operating a conveyor belt inside of a warehouse. Each day, we have a list of tasks we’re responsible for handling at certain times before the next one rolls through. If we maintain the rhythm, we’re in a good spot…but if we get off track, everything comes crashing down around us. It starts to feel mechanical after awhile.
That is, until we look up and wonder how in the world we’ve arrived to the end of yet another year. It’s during this time we’re keenly aware of the passage of time…and all the boxes that are left unchecked on our personal and figurative to-do lists. That’s why it’s so important to schedule time to check-in with ourselves regularly throughout the year—check-ins remind us of what’s important and guides us to recalibrate to what’s true.
If you haven’t checked in with yourself in awhile, not to worry—there’s still time! Grab your notebook, pen, and a quiet, cozy spot and ask yourself the following questions:
Well-being questions:
-How are you really doing today?
-What's been the biggest challenge for you recently? How are you handling that challenge?
-How have you been taking care of yourself lately? How can you take better care of yourself?
-What has been bringing you joy these days?
Emotional check-in questions:
-How do you feel emotionally currently?
-Who do you find yourself leaning on for emotional support?
-Who can you invite into your circle of emotional support?
-What do you need right now?
Parenting questions:
-How’s parenting been going for you recently?
-What’s one thing your child(ren) has done recently that made you proud?
-What’s one thing you’re proud of yourself for doing?
-Have there been moments where you've felt overwhelmed? What helped you get through it?
Parenting is one of the most emotionally, mentally, and spiritually demanding jobs there is. By regularly reflecting on your well-being, you can stay grounded in your role and be better equipped to handle the challenges that come with raising the next generation.
