Practically speaking, prayer is only effective because God is absolutely sovereign. It is part of His Master Plan that we would go to Him as His people. Prayer, in the Spirit forms us to think about God, the Gospel, and even ourselves in the right way. Prayer is powerful and it has a point because it is relational. Language is relational because it comes from God and what is prayer but language.

When we pray we are engaging in and enjoying communion with God - that is the point of prayer. Because He is who He is, we can pour ourselves out to Him, being formed by the language of the Spirit, and not getting it twisted that we go to God as little gods ourselves. But rather, we are His children. Prayer is not governed by our punch list but rather it's our personal connection to God, through language.

Beloved, when you pray, that Spirit forms your language and He builds you up to trust what God is doing in all things, and to go to Him with everything. We pray because God is sovereign, otherwise, it would be pointless. Ask the Lord to help you believe and be formed by the fact that "The Spirit Supplies the Language to Make Prayer Personal".

A wonderful sermon preached by Ruling Elder Kevin Mathis. Listen in!

"So let's pray today for God to stir up our spirits. If the building of your life with Christ has slowed down or come to a standstill, and there is no pressing desire in you to be a part of the work of God's kingdom in this church, and there's a voice inside you saying, the time has not yet come to rebuild the house of the Lord, then let's not listen to that voice and instead listen to the voice of Haggai that tells us that now is the time to build this house. Let's pray. Lord, thank you so much that you're our God. Thank you that you have made us your people. I do pray, Father, that you would inspire us by the Holy Spirit like you did these people in scripture, that you would stir up our spirits, Father. so that we might have a new love for you today, a new love for your work, and a desire to be a major part in your kingdom, Father. Be with these people, and we pray it in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, amen."

June Newsletter - Hot off the presses!

With the month of June having arrived we are moving from that spring feel to summer air! With that, we have a few things moving around in the church calendar. Things like some Growth Groups are taking a break, Sunday School is on hiatus, and we'll have some guest preachers as I make my pilgrimage up...

All of the language we listen to is going to form the way we live, the language we meditate on is going to change what we hope for in life and death... Jesus has declared that death has no more lasting power over us... will you listen to those words? Jesus has said we belong to Him, the good shepherd and he will care for us.... will you live like that? Jesus has said he is the fountain of life, bread from heaven, the living water who has come to eternally satisfy... are these words and this language the content of our meditation or is the world calling us somewhere else?

Even if it's 5 minutes in the morning, the afternoon, and the evening, let your days be littered with the gospel of Jesus and apply it to every moment. If you are thinking, "I've got no idea how to even start doing that..." Well, guess what, you now have 5 elders in this church that would love nothing more than to sit with you, pray with you, and think through with you how to do that in your own life. May we all continue to grow in "Meditating on the Restorative Power of a Good Word".

Jesus has come to restore a Gospel Grammar into hearts that were broken, lost, damaged, and darkened. As we trust in Jesus to restore and renew our language both in what we convey, and how we receive and what we receive, the Word takes our sinful words and forgives them by taking our punishment on Himself, and declaring on the cross, with language... "It is finished". Trust the language of the Son of God my friends, you are forgiven in Him.

My friends, we are not designed to endure these things alone. We do so as a body, as a church, reminding each other when the times are tough who Jesus is. That why the Lord gave me an old pastor to talk to this week... He knew I needed it. Avail yourself to reading and studying and listening to the words of the Lord as they are in the Psalms and the Gospels and the histories and throughout the Bible... The Spirit will take these words on the page and turn them into words of life that point us toward an eternal and perfect relief... and eternal and perfect relief that we get to experience even today...

All our anguish and lament is being resolved in God’s timing. He didn’t cause the problem, we did, but the scriptures proclaim that he is fixing it progressively, in His timing and one day, all anguish and lament and death will be wiped away from the world. Today, may we trust that “The Lord Turns Anguish to Joy all in His Timing”.

When a sheep is confused and wanders off, the sheep dog is sent by the shepherd to bring him or her back to the fold... When the sheep feels far off, away from the flock, lost in the wilderness, the sheep dog guides the beloved animal back to its master.

My friends, how is the Spirit guiding you back to Jesus even this morning? Where is that deep pocket of your heart that feels hard, or callous, or indifferent toward Jesus? What sorrow or grief or sinful pattern seems to have overtaken you and you’ve been trying to secretly fight this battle on your own?

You are not alone. The Lord has given you His Spirit, He has given you His Word, He has given you this communion of the saints, He has given you purpose, He has given you life, and the Spirit uses all of it, and so much, to sheep dog you back to Jesus. He promises that He will reorient us because we can’t do it on your own. When you feel Him moving your heart, so suppress it or ignore it, see where the Spirit of God is leading you... because, “The Spirit Teaches Us What It Means to Be Truly Human”.

Let me ask you this... because it really up to you... Do you want Jesus to take over those parts of your heart and infiltrate those areas of selfishness? Or would you prefer to perpetuate a divided kingdom within your very soul? The reality is beloved, you are starve one and feed the other. Jesus tells us a man or a woman cannot serve two masters...

It will feel like dying having the testimony of Jesus shine into those dark corners, it will feel like you are losing a piece of yourself... and that’s because you are. But remember, Jesus is the master surgeon... He only cuts those bits out of your heart that are poisoning the rest of you. He only slices in areas that will save you. Don’t hate the work of the Spirit ministering the testimony of Jesus even to those most embattled parts of your heart. Don’t despise the fact that Jesus is Lord over what you watch, and speak, and long for. He is Lord over your leisure, he is ruler over your rest, He is the master of our money... but in all of this, though we lose our autonomy, we gain Jesus. And yes, the world externally and the world within each of us will hate this and will do everything in it’s power to maintain control... But in the end, Jesus delivers what nothing else ever could. Embrace the tension and fight this good fight together, my friends. Because we are “Loved by Jesus, Hated by the World, & That’s Where We want to Be!”
