I was blessed to be hired full-time to assist a gentleman, 37 hours a week, who due to his circumstances, can no longer drive, manage his finances, or shop for himself. He is a young-at-heart man in his 60’s who has experienced the loss of loved ones, leaving him with very little to no family. He has no wife or children to care for him, and his reading skills have diminished over time. Despite some health issues, he remains grateful for the blessings in his life. He takes care of his personal needs but requires a little help and companionship to prevent feelings of loneliness, boredom, and depression, which could negatively impact his health. The ministry provides invaluable support, including transportation, shopping assistance, budgeting guidance, and friendship. My client has a zest for life and enjoys getting out to window shop at indoor flea markets and antique stores, taking leisurely walks in downtown areas, visiting friends, attending church, and being active. Having experienced significant life challenges and anxieties, I also provide spiritual and biblical guidance, offering words of encouragement and love from the Bible. Three weeks into our journey together, I had to take a brief absence for the Emmaus walk, and upon my return, my client welcomed me with open arms, expressing how much he had missed me. We spent the day shopping, having lunch, and exploring new places, which brought him immense joy. As our time together came to a close, he thanked me and said, “It’s been a good day!” His heartfelt appreciation touched my heart and reminded me of the profound impact of compassion and kindness.
