Religious Freedom and Peacemaking Bring Community Voices Together in El Paso
About 65 community members gathered Friday evening in El Paso for a conversation centered on religious freedom, understanding and peacemaking.
The event was led by Steven T. Collis, a nationally recognized scholar of religious liberty and First Amendment law, who shared the history and principles behind religious freedom and emphasized the importance of protecting the rights of people of all faiths—and of no faith—to live according to their conscience.
A diverse panel of local faith and community leaders also shared personal experiences and perspectives on what religious freedom looks like in everyday life. Their discussion highlighted the importance of listening, kindness and finding ways to work together despite differences in belief.
John Martin described religious freedom as “not just a legal principle; it’s a way of life.”
When discussing how communities can navigate differences, Martin offered another simple message: “I want to mention the word grace.”
The evening concluded with questions from the audience and an opportunity for attendees to continue conversations with one another.
Bringing together people from a variety of religious traditions and perspectives, the event focused on a shared goal: strengthening understanding, respect and peaceful relationships throughout the El Paso community.
