A Shift
6/11/26

Local 2377 members and mutual aid companies responded to Spring Garden Township for reports of smoke inside a residence behind Station 892.

Engine 892 arrived and found nothing showing from a duplex. The captain entered the home alone to investigate and discovered a kitchen fire.

The next-arriving unit was a mutual aid company that arrived 5 minutes later. The following unit arrived another 2 minutes after that.

Incidents like this are exactly why staffing matters. Every emergency is different, and when firefighters arrive, they never know what they are walking into or how long they may be operating alone before additional help arrives.

The data supporting increased minimum staffing is clear. More firefighters on the initial response means critical tasks can be completed faster, safer, and more effectively for both the public and firefighters.

Please sign the petition in the comments and help us bring safer staffing to our community.

Please join us in welcoming Probationary Firefighters Dunham, Sigafoose-Nicholson, and Haydt to York Area United Fire and Rescue after successfully completing the HACC Fire Academy, which began in January. These firefighters are filling existing vacancies within the department.

Dunham and Sigafoose-Nicholson will become members of IAFF Local 2377. Haydt will become a member of IAFF Local 3503.

Congratulations to all three on reaching this important milestone, and we wish them safe and successful careers serving our communities.

By refusing to approve additional staffing, the townships may be limiting the community’s ability to achieve an even better ISO rating—something that can impact both fire protection capabilities and insurance costs.

Back in November 2022, the following was stated during a third-party review:

“Mr. Winston commended the staff for going from an ISO rating of 4 to a rating of 3. He also mentioned the recent ISO rating for the City of York, going from a 3 to a 2. He noted staffing is only one component and they recommend if the staffing was improved that would be the greatest opportunity to help lower that rating even further.”

In other words, while many factors contribute to a community’s fire protection rating, it was recognized that improving staffing offered the greatest opportunity for further improvement.

Safe staffing doesn’t just benefit firefighters. It strengthens fire protection for residents, businesses, and the entire community. When emergencies happen, having enough firefighters on the apparatus matters.

ATTENTION Residents/business owners and workers.🚨🚨🚨

We urge anyone who has had interactions with York Area United Fire and Rescue or is aware of the organization’s ongoing staffing challenges to attend the YAUFR Commission Meeting on June 16, 2026, at 7:00 PM.

At this meeting, we will be presenting our petition for increased staffing to the Commission. This is also your opportunity to share your concerns, experiences, and thoughts directly with the Commission. Public input matters, and your voice can help shape the future of emergency services in our community.

Currently, fire engines are responding to emergencies with only two personnel. That means a driver and only one firefighter available to perform critical tasks on scene. This is not the level of service our residents deserve, and it creates safety concerns for both the public and firefighters.

If you support increased staffing and improved public safety, please attend and make your voice heard. This can even be done on the Zoom link provided that day. Also, sign the petition in the comments.

Community involvement in public meetings is more important than ever. Not just the regular commission meetings, but the workshops as well.

The YAUFR Commission has begun holding Charter Workshops on the second Monday of each month. These meetings are open to the public, but unlike regular commission meetings, they are not available on Zoom.

These workshops focus on ideas, policies, and processes that will shape how YAUFR operates in the future. We’ve already heard discussions about keeping meeting minutes as vague as possible, meaning that unless you’re physically in the room, you may never know what was actually discussed.

Transparency matters. That’s why Local 2377 will have members attending tonight’s workshop to observe and keep the public informed.

If decisions are being made that affect your fire department, your tax dollars, and your public safety, the community deserves to know about them.

Public safety isn’t a joke!!!

Meeting is at 6 PM at 50 Commons Drive, York, PA 17402

Members of Local 2377 and mutual aid companies are on scene in Springettsbury Township for a working house fire. Battalion 893 arrived on scene and had smoke showing sides A/D.

First arriving Engine only had 2 personnel which means they’re entering the building alone.

Today, members of IAFF Local 2377 had the opportunity to meet with Senator Dawn Keefer and Senator Kristin Phillips-Hill to discuss fire department staffing and public safety concerns.

We appreciate both senators taking the time to listen to our members, ask questions, and learn more about the challenges facing the department and the communities we serve.

Today, Local 2377 had the opportunity to speak with FOX43 about fire department staffing and the impact it has on both firefighters and the communities we serve.

We appreciate FOX43 helping bring attention to this important public safety issue and giving us the opportunity to share our concerns.

Increasing fire department staffing was brought up by York Area United Fire and Rescue in 2021. This isn’t new.

Take a moment to read and help spread the word. Safe staffing means safer communities.

The park gets $2 million yet your emergency gets 2 firefighters?

Springettsbury Township recently announced a $2,041,384 project to improve safety at Springettsbury Park, including new lighting, security cameras, repaved parking lots, and walking paths. We support investments that make our community safer.

But does Springettsbury Township realize the fire department is part of that community too?

What is frustrating is that when it comes to fire department staffing, the township continues to drag its feet but at least they will have new walking paths to do it on!

This article shows that township leaders recognize the importance of investing in safety and are willing to spend millions of dollars to improve it. Yet the first-due fire engines protecting those same parks, neighborhoods, businesses, and residents often respond with only 2 firefighters.

If safety is worth a $2 million investment at a park, what’s it worth in the fire department?

Sign the petition in the comments and let elected officials know you support investing in the safety of our community.
