The 2nd Cap Corps Alumni Retreat was a success! 🤎

We were blessed to again have volunteers spanning the decades, united in shared experiences of their service year. We all left with a renewed sense of what is means to live Franciscan Joy… and with hearts full of joy! Bonus: We got to celebrate two birthdays as well 🎉

More to come in our Spring Newsletter coming out end of May/early June. Email [email protected] to be added to the mailing list.

Join us in wishing Cap Corps volunteer, Elias Rivera, a very happy birthday today!🎉🎂🎈

Elias serves at the Spanish Catholic Center of Catholic Charities and has been a valuable addition to their team. He supports the Medical Clinic once a week and assists the Employment and Social Services department the remaining four days.

Elias is a blessing to his Cap Corps community with his easy-going nature, contagious laugh, love of the Saints, and all the fun "Gen Z" quips! We give thanks for the gift of his life today and the blessing he is to Cap Corps and the community in which he serves. 💙

This is more than a mostly empty plate, chicken wing and hot sauce.

This image represents the joy, creativity and bonding of a Community Night with current volunteers Kathryn, Elias, Logan, Alex and House Director Br. Pablo.

🤔What is Community Night?

While Kyra, our director, likes to joke that community night is really every night, THE weekly Community Night is a special evening for bonding, fun and/or formation. The House Friar joins the volunteers for dinner, prayer and then some activity to come together—the sky is the limit! Crafts, movies, games, cooking, outings, spiritual content, education. You get it.

🍗Where does the chicken wing come in?

On this particular night the group opted to do a competition inspired by family stories told on winter retreat: who can handle the hottest hot sauce! Each dipped a chicken wing (or vegan nugget!) into some real spicy sauce and proceeded to read the opening lines of Gospel of John. The winner was Kathryn, who seemed completely unphased (video proof🎥😱) Br. Pablo was maybe the most expressive and entertaining…🥵 More importantly, all had tons of fun, built memories and laughed a lot.

Cap Corps loves community!

Last week Cap Corps hosted part one of our two-part formation series on Catholic Social Teaching (CST). We all enjoyed cozy living room vibes and spirited conversation!

Grace de Zamaroczy, a local high school Religious Studies teacher in the Archdiocese of Washington, led an interactive, informative and reflective presentation on the seven themes of CST.

Program Director Kyra Koons was present as was House Director, Br. Pablo Lopez OFM, Cap. We look forward to part two this month, which will feature a deeper dive into case studies and particular topics chosen by the volunteers.

Join us in wishing Cap Corps volunteer, Alexander Spurger, a very happy birthday! 🎉🎂🎈

Alex serves at Don Bosco Cristo Rey High School in an Academic Support role. While in his service year, he has also demonstrated great flexibility by helping with the Corporate Work Study Program at DBCR as well. Alex has loved getting to work with students, and the students have loved him!

Tonight, his community member baked him a cake to celebrate 🎉 Alex brings humor, helpful structure and great story telling to his Cap Corps community. We give thanks for the gift of his life today and his YES to Cap Corps🩵
