After the Big Thompson River flood in 2013, Highway 34 underwent a massive reconstruction. The road was closed off and on for roughly 5 years. Only the people living in the area (and our Church Family) had permits to get through the construction. This made rebuilding the Chapel in Drake, Colorado, impossible until it was finished.

So this is the first picture of the progress! That is a new retaining wall to help support the road that goes above the chapel lot. The picture shows the recent rain.

We have been trying to rebuild the Chapel ever since. The reason we had to wait is because of all the new regulations and permits required around the Big Thompson River.

After the fire, the Chapel in Drake, Colorado, was torn down with the intent to rebuild immediately. Since then, it has taken 10 years to work through the state and county processes. The Lord must have said that was not the right time.

Ten years ago, in 2016, remnants of debris from the 2013 Big Thompson River flood caught fire and scorched the Chapel in Drake, Colorado. The Chapel building burned and the supports in the A-frame were left unstable. The building was condemned.

Two years after the flood, the congregation was able to gather again in the Chapel building. It took over a year, $90,000, and hundreds of hours of work to get back into the Chapel building in November of 2014. Notice the white paint on the A-frame walls rather than the original beautiful wood grain. Mold mitigation alone cost $20,000.

Because of the Highway 34 road repairs, we couldn't get to into the Chapel to take care of it. The water sat for too long inside the building. We had to replace all the pews, carpets, books, and anything that had mold.

The water level in the Chapel after the Big Thompson River flooded in 2013 was around 6ft high from the ground which was about 40" high inside the building. We could see the actual level marked on the pulpit as the sitting water stained the wood. The Chapel building was closed for months to renovate and remove mud and mold.

After the Big Thompson River flood of 2013, the Chapel in Drake was inaccessible for months due to road conditions, water damage, and mold. The Chapel building was closed during that time and the congregation met at Allnut Funeral Home in Loveland and, later, in the BTCA building next to the fire station in Drake.

In 2013, a once-in-500-year flooding of the Big Thompson River occurred that destroyed parts Highway 34 in the Drake, Colorado canyon. Hundreds of homes were damaged and some lost their lives. The Chapel in Drake became flooded up to 6ft. The following construction and rebuilding prevented us from meeting at the Chapel for months.
