There’s just something about a boat with power behind it. I’ve had a lot of boats in my life, but my 26-foot Nemesis with the 225 Mercury four-stroke always puts a smile on my face. Squeeze the throttle and let her eat — 10 to 15 miles across the lake chasing new fish, running through wind, weather, and open water. Ocean, river, or lake… it never gets old. Wonderful day on Whiskeytown Lake. The lake is still producing both numbers and quality fish. This time of year I’ve been focusing more on Lake Shasta for the variety of species, but Whiskeytown definitely didn’t disappoint today.

25 fish by noon with an awesome group of kids on board. Nothing better than seeing everybody smiling, laughing, and having a great time on the water. Days like this are what it’s all about.

Lake Shasta continues to produce some incredible fish right now. We’re seeing a great variety of species hitting the deck — rainbow trout, king salmon, brown trout — but the true king of the lake will always be kokanee salmon.

Kokanee are hands down the most sought-after fish we target. They’re the hardest fish in the lake to consistently catch, they fight great, and in my opinion they’re the best eating fish Lake Shasta has to offer. Bright red fillets, incredible flavor, and a fishery that keeps people coming back year after year.

There’s a reason so many anglers book trips specifically for kokanee. When you finally get a good school located and put together a solid day on the water, it’s one of the most rewarding fisheries around.
