We love seeing people use their gifts to serve—both inside and outside the church! ⛪️✨

Whether you are 9 years old, a college student, or enjoying retirement, God can use you to help others.

In the first photo, Pastor Steve is getting a lesson on how to run our Sunday slides from one of the experts in our children's ministry. 💻🧒

In the second photo, the kids in the church are serving at the homeless shelter alongside a couple Drake students, and other adults in the church.

It is such a blessing to see every generation working together for the Kingdom!

Will you pray with us? Join us in asking that God continues to raise up servants within Emmaus who will work together, support one another, and lead with a heart of service.

It’s been incredible to watch how God has moved through the partnership between Emmaus and Drake Chi Alpha. 🤝

We started with a dream of what this collaboration could look like, but God has gone far beyond our imaginations!

From seeing Drake students serve at the Downtown Homeless Shelter and helping with Foster Care Nights, to their faithful hearts on Sunday mornings in worship and kids ministry—the energy they bring is a gift.

In turn, we’ve loved supporting campus events, leading Bible studies, and joining in on weekly Chi Alpha services.

We are so grateful for how God is weaving our communities together and can’t wait to see what’s next!

If you're looking for a community, there’s always a seat at our table!" 🙌✨
Nothing beats the "shared friendship" of a church potluck.

Growing up, one of my favorite things about church were our potluck lunches.

I always looked forward to the variety of food and desserts that people in the church would prepare and share with one another.

I also appreciated the unstructured time to be able to get to hangout and get to know others in a more personal and deep way.

Following Easter last Sunday, we had a potluck lunch this week, to enjoy good food and fellowship with one another.

It was great to see people spread out at various tables, getting to know one another better.

I equally enjoyed seeing the kids full of energy and running around, playing with each other.

It was a reminder that God's people aren't simply called to worship together but also to have shared friendship!

Will you join me in praying that these deep friendships continue to grow within our congregation?

We had an incredible Easter Sunday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus! 🕊️

As I’ve (Pastor Brandon) been reflecting this week, there are five specific blessings that I am especially thankful for:

Our Pastoral Team: I am so grateful for a team that leans into their unique gifts. Pastor Tiffani led us into God’s presence through worship, Pastor Jeremy challenged us to feel the weight and gratitude of Christ’s sacrifice, Pastor Hannah created such a warm, welcoming space, and our Kids Director, Rebekah, made sure the morning was full of joy and care for our littlest ones.

The Power of Testimony: A student from Drake shared his journey of walking away from the faith and finding his way back to God. It was a powerful reminder that resonated with so many in the room.

New Beginnings: We welcomed a visitor who hadn’t been to church in over 10 years! He responded to an online invite and brought his two daughters—it was moving to hear how God worked in his life during the service.

Radical Hospitality: One of our members used her catering talents to provide a pancake bar and lemonade slushies. That extra touch of warmth made the fellowship in the room truly special. 🥞

Family Traditions: On a personal note, Hannah and I loved sharing our Saturday night tradition with our kids—a simple meal of toast and water to reflect on the sacrifice of Jesus, followed by an Easter feast of all their favorite foods. Seeing their excitement for the day is a gift I don't take for granted.

This Sunday, we’re looking at how Jesus gave the world a hope far better than anything expected. ✝️

Historically, the church has recalled this hope by declaring Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.

We’re diving into the journey of Psalms 22-24:

Psalm 22 (Christ has Died): The Sacrifice. Jesus was forsaken and pierced in our place so that we could have life.

Psalm 23 (Christ is Risen): The Shepherd. He guides, refreshes, and protects us through the Holy Spirit today.

Psalm 24 (Christ Will Come Again): The King. One day, He will return to end all injustice and make all things right.

Because of Christ, we aren't just "getting by"—we are saved, guided, and full of hope.

Join us this Easter Sunday as we celebrate the King whose kingdom is not of this world!

The Family of God on Full Display! 🙌

This past Sunday, we welcomed our second Emmaus baby! 👶 He decided to arrive a few weeks early, and while we are overjoyed that mom and baby are doing great, it left us in a bit of a pinch.

Our scheduled worship leaders—the new grandparents!—rightfully rushed to be with their daughter.

That left us without worship leaders just 3 hours before service.

What happened next was a beautiful picture of "servant hearts:"

One guitarist stepped up to learn new parts on the fly. 🎸
One vocalist pushed through a cold to share her voice. 🎤
Pastor Tiffany jumped in to lead worship right before preaching her scheduled sermon! 📖

It wasn’t just about the music; it was about a church family covering for each other so we could all experience God’s presence together.

Join us in:
1️⃣ Thanking God for the servant-hearted people at Emmaus.
2️⃣ Praying that God continues to send more people to serve alongside us!

Miracles are happening at Emmaus. ✨

In the last month, our hearts have been moved by the testimonies shared during our Sunday ministry time.

• One of our senior saints shared how, in a moment of total hopelessness, he stood on a bridge ready to end it all. He felt a hand pull him back—but when he looked around, no one was there. God saved him.

• Another sister shared her struggle with a year of dialysis and feeling "useless." But God met her in her pain, bringing overwhelming hope through the song "The Goodness of God."

Testimonies like these remind us that no one is beyond God’s reach.

Join us in prayer: May God continue to use these stories to strengthen our Emmaus community and reach those in Des Moines who feel discouraged today. 🙏

At Emmaus, we believe the Bible isn’t just a book—it’s truth is the foundation for transformation. That’s why our Sunday sermons are rooted in the Christian Lectionary.

The Lectionary includes an Old Testament Scripture, a Psalm, a Gospel Passage, and a selection from Acts or the letters written to the early church.

By looking at the whole Bible, we see one clear picture: Everything points to Jesus. We start every sermon with a congregational reading, letting God's Word be the first and final authority.

We’ve seen the Holy Spirit move powerfully through this faithful preaching!

Will you join us in prayer? Pray that God continues to use His Word to challenge and transform lives right here in Des Moines.

The Presence of God

One of the great blessings of Emmaus is that we have 5 pastors in the church.

I appreciate how each of us flows in our gifts to connect the congregation to God in different ways through worship, Communion, the Word, and hospitality.

I also appreciate the way that the people of Emmaus share the presence of God in our time of mutual ministry.

On Sundays, in small groups, in outreach, and across the table God's presence is palpable.

Will you pray that everyone who comes to Emmaus, especially guests, will continue to experience the presence of God?

Last week, I shared that Emmaus is a Spirit-filled sanctuary for Des Moines—a place to experience the love of God’s family, the power of prayer, the presence of God, and the Truth of the Bible.

This past year, we’ve had a front-row seat to how God moves when His people pray, and this past Sunday was a breathtaking example.

The morning took a powerful turn as the Holy Spirit shifted our focus toward intentional thanksgiving.

From that place of gratitude, we opened the service up for people to call out the names of loved ones in need of healing and hope.

And finally we invited those in the room to raise their hands if they needed prayer support and the atmosphere changed.

In the midst of this, a man stood to share how God miraculously delivered him from cancer and the grip of darkness.

It was a "holy interruption" that reminded us why we do what we do.

Will you join us in praying that God continues to stretch our faith and lead us by His Spirit?

At Emmaus, we open every service by declaring we are a Spirit-filled Sanctuary for Des Moines—a place to experience the love of God’s family, the power of prayer, the presence of God, and the truth of His Word.

As pastor, I am blessed to facilitate these moments. To share the love of God’s family, I greet every person at the door and pray over each person by name during worship. But sometimes, I fall into the trap of thinking the task of "showing love" rests solely on my shoulders.

This past Sunday, I was gently and beautifully corrected. During our time of mutual ministry midway through the service, I stood back and watched. I saw multiple people introducing themselves to guests. I saw a room where no one was overlooked or ignored. It was a sanctuary truly filled with warmth and love.

The Bible reminds us that the pastor isn't the sole minister; all believers are gifted to minister to one another. Seeing this lived out is humbling and beautfiul.

Will you pray with us? Pray that everyone at Emmaus continues to both extend and receive the incredible love of God’s family.

"Do not grow weary in doing well." For the first message of the year, I preached on Galatians 6:1-10.

In this passage Paul gives instructions on how the church community should encourage one another and how God encourages us.

Towards the end of this passage, Paul says, "Do not grow weary in doing well."

It was a great reminder to be encouraged:

- Be encouraged that the person you've been praying over for years, has only seemed to move further from God

- Be encouraged that no matter the circumstances of this life, our hope is in a glorious and perfect eternity

- Be encouraged that we have a community in the church where we carry one another's burdens and hardships

- Be encouraged that God that we have the ability to walk personally with God day by day

I just shared all the amazing things God has done over our first year as a church, and God has blessed us mightily.

But we've also experienced difficult things like:

- Multiple people making a commitment to be part of the church, disappearing without a word, and ghosting us
- People beginning to grow in God and relapsing back into addiction or even going to jail
- Trusting God to meet the financial needs of our family and the church

Sometimes in these things, there is a temptation to grow weary, but has given us a faithful community at church that walks together in support, encourages us through the Holy Spirit, and has set eternity before us, so we can keep moving forward in faithfulness to what God has called us to!
