Arts and Crafts: Homily for Thursday, July 30, 2026

Arts and Crafts. God knows what he has made. And what he's trying to say in this first reading is that God is all-powerful. That God can do whatever God wants. And he's reminding the people, you know, you only exist because of me. You only exist because I love you. You only exist because I created you in love....

Family. Where is the desire of our heart? The kingdom of heaven should be the desire of our heart. And it should be the desire of our heart in a way that is so strong that we would do anything to enter into it. We would seek out a treasure buried in a field. We will buy a pearl of great price.

Broken Heart: Homily for Tuesday, July 28, 2026

Broken heart. In our lives too we probably have such moments. When we have been faithful to the Word of God, we have sought to live in a way that he wishes us to live, but things don't always turn out so well. And that's a time where it's really hard to be faithful. That's a time where we might say we don't understand what it is that God is doing or how it is that God is acting. But we need to remember the lesson of the prophet Jeremiah that when such times arise we too must turn to the Lord....

Seeing Clearly: Homily for Thursday, July 23, 2026

The Word of the Lord says, "I remember the devotion of your youth, how you loved me as a bride, following me in the desert in a land unsown." But they don't remember. They abandon the devotion of their youth. The leaders won't listen to Jeremiah and ultimately the community and Jeremiah wind up in two different places in exile....

The Desire of God: Homily for Wednesday, July 22, 2026

The Desire of God. And that really is what comes from our baptism. That we are called to go and tell. To share the good news, especially with those whose lives are much like the lives of Mary Magdalene. Broken. To tell people that Jesus loves them more than they can possibly imagine. And that Jesus can do for them more than they can possibly imagine....

Time Travel: Homily for Tuesday, July 21, 2026

Time travel. Memory is something that is just wonderful for us to consider. In fact, when we come to Mass, it's a special type of memory that we participate in, an anamnesis. Which takes an event that occurred and makes it present always, that Jesus does that....

St. Bonaventure: Homily for Wednesday, July 15, 2026

St. Bonaventure. While these are simply the readings of the day, the gospel today is really connected, I think, with people like Saint Bonaventure who sought to seek understanding. In fairness, most people who lived in the time of Saint Bonaventure or Saint Thomas Aquinas had no knowledge of what they were saying because most people couldn't read....

Twice: Homily for Sunday, July 19, 2026

Twice. God prays when we do not know how. God strengthens us when we are weak, and gives us more than just one second chance. God gives his forgiveness each and every time we ask. In asking for forgiveness, God makes this ask take root in something we can experience in this world, something we can know for certain is true....

Problem Child: Homily for Wednesday, July 8, 1963

The problem child. Israel, the northern kingdom seemed to be constantly turning their backs on God and seeking out idols. But we can make things idols too. We can turn our backs on God. But when we turn toward God, when we seek a deep and playful relationship with God, then indeed do we find ourselves in a fulfilling life....
