Retired Staff:
Did you know the Social Security Fairness Act was passed back in Jan 2024.
1. This act effects teachers, police and first responders, etc. If you worked at sometime in your career and paid into Social Security for at least 40 quarters the law at the time would not allow you to draw Social Security because we were penalize by a windfall elimination provision (WEP) . Now teachers can apply for the 14 months of back benefits and regular monthly benefits going forward . You have to apply at www.ssa.gov . Or make an appointment at the Danville Social Security office (or the any local Soc Security office).
2. In addition if you are over 65 and your spouse paid and received Social Security benefits you can now apply for benefits thru your spouse. You will receive the highest benefits between you and your spouse. This applies to widows as well.
It is our understanding several teachers have already started receiving benefits. Remember every case is different so it might be best to make an appointment with your local Soc Security office.
Good luck!
