Satan’s Hat Trick*
I grew up on Lake Erie, fifty miles west of Cleveland. One of the cherished memories of my youth was when my father would surprise me and we would drive into Cleveland. The purpose of these special outings was to go watch my favorite football team play, the Browns. Through the eyes of my youth, entering Lakefront stadium was to enter hallowed ground. The Browns in 1964 had a very predictable offense that consisted of basically three plays; Jim Brown sweep right, Jim Brown sweep left, and passes from Dr. Frank Ryan to hall of famer, Paul Warfield. They won the NFL championship in 1964. The defenses knew what was coming, but the Browns that year were unstoppable with basically three plays in their offensive playbook.
As the redeemed, we are instructed by the Apostle Paul in his letter to the Ephesians with a critical truth for those seeking to hear the words, “Well done” when finished with their race and enter glory. That truth is found in Ephesians 6:12, “We do not fight against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” All believers are engaged in a spiritual war. And in that war, Satan has only three plays to run against us. We need to understand those three plays so we can stand against the wiles of the devil. The Apostle Peter exhorts us to “Be sober-minded and alert. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” Sadly, many are devoured for lack of knowledge.
Just what are Satan’s three plays, his attempted Hat Trick against all believers? His tactics have not changed since the garden. He ran his three plays against both Eve and Jesus, centuries later. Eve succumbed to the attack on her soul, Jesus was victorious. What three plays are in Satan’s playbook? What is the cycle he runs against all who desire to follow our Risen Lord? His three plays: the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eye, and the boastful pride of life. Let us look at Eve’s test and fall and Jesus’s test and victory.
1 Now the serpent was more cunning than any animal of the field that the LORD God had made.
2 And the woman said to the serpent We may eat the fruit of the trees in the garden
3 But of the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the garden God has said You shall not eat of it nor touch it or you will die.
4 Then the serpent said to the woman You will not surely die
5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened and you will be like God knowing good and evil.
6 And the woman saw that the tree was good for food (lust of the flesh) and that it was delightful to the eyes (lust of the eye) and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise (boastful pride of life) so she took of its fruit and ate and she also gave some to her husband who was with her and he ate.
*In hockey a Hat Trick is when an individual scores three goals. Satan seeks to score against us-…
The testing of Jesus and the beginning of His Ministry. Mathew 4:1-11
Same three temptations, different rotation.
1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit int the wilderness to be tested by the devil.
2 He faster for forty days and forty nights and afterward was hungry.
3 The tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God command these stones to become bread. (lust of the flesh, I know you are hungry)
4 But he answered, “It is written man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
5/6 Then the devil took him into the holy city and set him on the highest peak of the temple. He said to Him, “If you are the Son of God throw yourself down for it is written
He will command Hid angels concerning you and they will lift you up in their hands so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. (boastful pride of life, go on- be Mr. Big)
7 Jesus said to him, “Again, you shall not test the Lord your God.”
8 Again the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the Kingdoms of the world and their glory.
9 He said to Him, “All these I will give to you if you will bow down before me.” (lust of the eye,)
10 Then Jesus said to him, “you shall worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.”
11 Then the devil left Him and the angels came and cared for him.
So, there we have it. We now know Satan’s playbook. It has not changed. Eve failed, Jesus was victorious. Do you see the parallel between Eve’s temptation and Jesus’s temptation? How Jesus emerged victorious it is imperative for us to note AND follow. His response to Satan was always the same. He quoted scripture! Jesus was fully God AND fully man. He faced the same temptations as we who have decided to follow Him. This is why scripture memory is ESSENTIAL in overcoming temptation, the lost art and practice of fasting as well. The apostle Paul gives us the good news in his letter to the Corinthian church who had gone pro on sins of the flesh. First Corinthians 10:13 promises that God is faithful and will not allow believers to be tempted beyond their ability. Instead, He provides a "way of escape" with every temptation, enabling them to endure it. It emphasizes that temptations are common to humanity and that God provides strength to stand.
I like how the amplifies Bible puts it: No temptation [regardless of its source] has overtaken or enticed you that is not common to human experience [nor is any temptation unusual or beyond human resistance]; but God is faithful [to His word—He is compassionate and trustworthy], and He will not let you be tempted beyond your ability [to resist], but along with the temptation He [has in the past and is now and] will [always] provide the way out as well, so that you will be able to endure it [without yielding, and will overcome temptation with joy].
Finally, my Brothers and Sisters- heed Jame’s advice (1:4)- “Resist the devil and he will flee from you.”
