Salem Cemetery Association, Cass County, Texas Welcome to the Salem Cemetery Association page. We appreciate your support of our historic site. We are raising funds to add this permanent signage.

Salem Cemetery
Salem Cemetery has existed for 150 years along a country road in deep East Texas. Generations of family members have found their final resting place here. Our mission as the Salem Cemetery Association is to both honor the legacy of our heritage, as well as maintain a small piece of this earth where departed loved ones and friends are interred. The Salem Cemetery Association was orga

nized in 1989 to provide upkeep of the cemetery. In 2004, the Salem Cemetery Association became a 501(c-13) Non-Profit cemetery organization registered with the State of Texas. Current officers of Salem Cemetery Association are Susan Anthony Billings, Donna Simmons, Tonja Hawkins, Staley Cash, and Melvin Timmons. The officers of the Association meet the first Saturday of April and October at the Salem Baptist Church to conduct the business of the Association. However, work continues throughout the year to maintain the cemetery grounds. This rural cemetery receives no funds or support from any local, county or state government agency. Ongoing maintenance includes mowing & edging, trash pickup, leveling graves and gravestones, maintaining fences, driveways and walkways. The Salem Cemetery Association also holds a Flag Ceremony in May honoring all veterans who served our country in the military. You are welcome to join us for our business meetings, and your attendance would be welcomed at the Flag Ceremony to be held May 14 this year. Improvement Project: a much needed improvement to Salem Cemetery is new signage with grave location information. If you can help in funding this necessary improvement project, please send your contribution to

Good morning, friends of the Cemetery. We are getting hit hard by hogs. If you go by, please know we are aware. Sadly, there aren't many options for the management of these beasts. There are a number of people trapping along Salem Rd, but the numbers are so great that it barely taps the issue. Hogs have been known to topple headstones and cause millions of dollars in damages annually in Texas. Hopefully, they move along soon!!

A note of gratitude.
We recently lost a man who’s dedication to the Salem Cemetery Association created a lasting and meaningful impact.

Billy Jim Puckett served on the inaugural board organized in 1989, to create perpetual care for the upkeep of the cemetery and to honor the memory of loved ones buried here.

We have been fortunate to have Mr. Puckett & his wife Estelle’s continued involvement over these many years. His big, genuine smile and positive attitude was infectious. When Billy smiled, everyone else did too!! We miss him greatly and sincerely appreciate all he and Estelle have contributed to our association and those interred on our grounds.

Here is an excerpt from his obituary. If you wish to read more or offer condolences, this link will take you to his memorial page.

William "Billy" Puckett, age 92, of Blanchard, Louisiana passed away on Monday, November 11, 2024. Billy was born on August 15, 1932 in Bloomburg, Texas to the late William Raymond and Lora Ellen Coleman Puckett.
Billy proudly served his country as a U.S. Army veteran during the Korean Conflict and dedicated 22 years as a skilled carpenter at the VA Hospital. He was a man of rare character---one whose presence left an indelible mark on all who knew him. Billy embodied the virtues of hard work, humility, and kindness, always putting others first and remaining selfless to the very end.
A man of unwavering Christian faith, Billy lived according to his beliefs, offering love, compassion, and support to everyone he encountered. His fierce independence and resolute determination were hallmarks of his life, and his commitment to doing what was right never faltered. His legacy is one of integrity, strength, and deep love for family and friends.
