KTC DALLAS was begun in the late 1980s by a group of local individuals with an interest in meditation and Tibetan Buddhist teachings. Weekly group practice was conducted in membersβ homes or rented commercial space. From time to time the group would sponsor visits by Lamas of the Karma Kagyu lineage, most especially the Abbot of Karma Triyana Dharmachakra monastery, Venerable Khenpo Karthar Rinpoc
he. It was Khenpo Rinpoche who authorized the formation of KTC Dallas as an affiliate center of Karma Triyana Dharmachakra. KTC Dallas was formally incorporated as a not-for-profit in the State of Texas in 1990. In 1990 the center also purchased its own building in a residential neighborhood in north Oak Cliff. (This building was recently sold, as it no longer served our needs.) KTC Dallas has enjoyed a stable and growing membership base, currently around 40 members. The purpose of the organization is to provide a place for the teachings of the Dharma, and of the Karma Kagyu lineage and His Holiness Karmapa Ugyen Trinley Dorje in particular, to take root in this part of the world. KTC Dallas is member-funded, with no financial assistance from outside entities. Most organizational and administrative work is performed by members on a volunteer basis. In June of 2009, the Sunday meeting was moved to the Dallas Yoga Center. We have benefited greatly by having space to grow into, with adequate parking for visitors and regular attendees. It became increasingly evident that our need for a public meeting place was no longer compatible with the residential character of our then current property, so it was placed on the market and sold on October 2nd, 2012. We purchased property in Irving, Texas and formally opened for dharma activities in late August 2013.
