Those people, however you define those people, are not your enemies. Not truly.

There is a cosmic force of chaos, malignant ignorance, anticonstruction, and malevolence that is your enemy. This subpersonal force wants to steal, kill, and destroy; however, its purposes were thwarted, its effects were reversed, and its claim on you was spoiled in the crucifixion of the Son of God.

We as a Church make war on it through prayer, giving, hospitality, forgiveness, self-giving love, and proclaiming the Lord’s death until He comes.

We never make war on people. Even looking at “those people,” we cannot pronounce “idiot, as***le, or damned.”

It is not enough to get the right answers on some theology or ethics test. We have to live like Christ.

Are you like me? Does the idea of church bring up complicated feelings - a mixed bag of identity forming community and trauma inducing inflexibility?

Can you sympathize with Gandhi who said, “I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.”?

This side of glory, the Church will be complicated. It’s led and attended by sinners and hypocrites. That should frustrate you and welcome you. We come as we are.

If bravery comes upon you this morning, and you want to give church one more shot, give me a text. In content and style, we belong to a long line of churches. In format, we’re pretty different. If you’re tired of showing up to a bad rock concert, reach out. Together we can be church another way.

Love,
Pastor Adam

Where are the poor, the disenfranchised, the disabled? Where are the lonely, the outcasts, the strange, and the sinners?

Where are the powerless, the hopeless, the homeless, and the hurting?

Where are the grieving, the doubting, the longing, and the reviled?

That’s where Jesus is.

If you want Him, you’ll find Him outside the camp binding up wounds and ministering to the lost.

You won’t find Him in the halls of power. You won’t find Him tending bank vaults.
You won’t find Him in the arms of yet another lover who coos this time it will be different.

If you want Him, go where He is.

Moment of honesty?

I’m glad the imprecatory psalms were included.

Not because destructive feelings are right, and not to baptize anger, but to tell us that God knows we will feel that angry at injustice, and He invites us to go to Him with it instead of swallowing it or doing something about it ourselves.

God hates injustice more than we do. He weeps with us in our pain and fear. While I can’t trust my anger to be righteous, and can trust God to be just.

Either He will end evil by attaching it to His cross in an act of mercy as brazenly unfair as the one that saved us, or He will end the evil doer forever in hell.

When your blood begins to boil at the injustice of the world, in the privacy of your prayer closet it isn’t impious to pray, “Blot their name out of your book.” It’s honest.

Then ask the Spirit to make all things right again, to show you the depths of both your sin and God’s faithful forgiveness in Christ, and ask to desire the heights of God’s righteousness and the depths of God’s mercy to be poured out on the world through Christ.

As long as church is an event, as long as Christianity is a ritual to gain social capital, as long as the gospel is used as a get out of hell free card, it can’t help you live Monday-Saturday. It can’t help you in your marriage or raise your kids. It can’t allay social or political angst. It can’t give you ultimate peace and joy.

But if the church is a people to whom you belong, religious rituals are used as spiritual training ground to love and serve God and His world, and the gospel is understood in union with Jesus, life can be completely different and healing is possible.

Until you know that the degree that the Father loves Jesus Christ is the degree to which He loves you, faith will not be a rescue but an obligation.

There is another way. Tomorrow, 10am. Come and See.

If you’re reading the Bible for any other reason besides religious affection and spiritual devotion, you’re doing it wrong.

If you’re lifting holy hands in worship, and praying without ceasing, but you don’t know who the God you’re praising has revealed Himself to be, you’re doing it wrong.

The head and the heart have to go together.

On Saturday the 12th, I’ll be at the downtown Front Porch Coffee at 9am. Coffee and breakfast are on me if you want to come hangout and talk life, church, faith, or doubt.

Please text me if you’re coming. It’s an open invitation. If there’s someone in your life who could use Christian community or a latte, bring them on!

Where are you worshipping this morning?

If you are in Abilene, and you’re looking for something different, I’d love to see you at St Thomas the Doubter.

We’re a housechurch rooted in the Anglican tradition. Come and see!

The first person to name God in the Bible was Hagar, Abraham’s victim of sexual exploitation.

If every word of the Bible is God-breathed, if every word is on purpose, if we learn who God is through the victories of the people of God as well as their failures, this first naming matters.

Abraham takes Hagar, impregnates her, mistreats her, and then casts her out into the wilderness to die, and then God shows up for her.

Maybe you’ve been mistreated by someone claiming to belong to God. Maybe you’ve been used and cast off when you didn’t toe the line. Maybe you’ve been an outsider so long you can’t imagine that God wants to sit you at His table.

Hagar didn’t call God, “Almighty,” or “Master,” or “YHVH.” Hagar called Him, “The God Who Sees Me” when He rescued her from certain death. This one gave her promises and a great hope and deliverance.

If you are hiding because of who you are, if you’ve been rejected by person after person because of things you can’t change, if you can’t imagine that the offer of life with Christ could be for you, look to the God Who Sees. God loves you, and He has done everything necessary to bring you home. He can save to the uttermost all who come to Him to do so. You matter to God, and you matter to me.

Happy Pride
