✨We don’t yet have the history of this small church in Clay County, Georgia (except to share that it was called Thompson Baptist Grove), so we’re sharing it here in hopes that someone out there does.

Because simple rural churches like this one deserve to be remembered just as much as the larger, more architecturally significant sanctuaries. Every one of them holds a story.

If you recognize this church or know anything about its past, we’d love to hear from you.

✨If you step inside this nearly 200-year-old sanctuary, you’ll immediately feel it. A quiet warmth and grace as sunlight pours through eleven tall stained-glass windows, casting gentle colors across pews that have held generations of worshippers.

And while it still exudes the charm of the 1800s, this church isn’t frozen in time. Look closely, and you’ll notice thoughtful updates made over the years to help the building meet the needs of its congregation while preserving its historic character.

This is Lincolnton Presbyterian Church in Lincoln County, Georgia, organized in 1823 and still offering a place for worship nearly two centuries later.

✨Don’t scroll past this one. Places like Bethel Church remind us of the roots beneath our feet!

Tucked deep in Heard County, Georgia, just across the Alabama line, sits Bethel Primitive Baptist Church, one of the oldest congregations in the region and a quiet witness to nearly two centuries of change.

Built by early settlers on land once held by the Creek Nation, this humble church doubled as a school, hosted all-day singings, and even held organ-led services back in the 1800s. Its cemetery tells the stories of Revolutionary and Civil War veterans who carved a life from the Georgia frontier.

Though fire partially destroyed the building in 1925, the handmade pews and heart pine walls survived and still stand today!

✨In danger of collapse, Sandy Grove Baptist Church in Warren County, Georgia was founded in 1875. Though it has sat empty for years, we believe places like this are important and worthy of a place in the history books.

So we set out to uncover its story, hoping that by preserving its history, it might be almost gone, but it won't be forgotten.

✨If you blink, you might miss the quiet town of Norwood, Georgia, but we think small communities like this one are worth remembering.

In 1881, Norwood’s Methodist Church got its start in a little schoolhouse across from what’s now Norwood Baptist. By 1882, a proper church building was erected for this growing railroad town.

Norwood once buzzed with promise: a grist mill, a busy depot, a telegraph office, and even one of the first rural mail routes in Georgia. Though the town has faded with time, the church, the cemetery, and a few old storefronts remain as echoes of its past.

✨We love these old foot pedal organs!

This one is particularly decorative and would have been quite expensive in its day. We're sure it provided a welcome sound and accompaniment for the parishioners that joined in singing hymns at Mt. Olivet Methodist Church in Banks County, Georgia, for over a century.

✨Blood-stained floors mark the place where soldiers were brought to be treated inside Old Stone Church in Catoosa County, Georgia.

Founded in 1837 as Chickamauga Presbyterian Church, the Old Stone Church stands as one of the most fascinating historic landmarks in northwest Georgia- and a rare survivor from the era when this region was still a rugged frontier.

Constructed from locally quarried limestone, the church served not only as a house of worship for early settlers but also as a community gathering place, a school, and later, a Civil War hospital. During the 1863 Battle of Chickamauga, it sat on the edge of the conflict, witnessing some of the most intense fighting of the war. Soldiers from both sides were treated within these walls, and the building still bears marks from that chapter of history in the bloodstains that remain on the floor.
