COVID song of the week.

George Matheson was a 19th century minister in the Church of Scotland. He was also a scholar/theologian. Some say he could have been a leader in the Church of Scotland because of his gifts. He met a girl, and they were engaged to be married. However, Matheson began to go blind. His fiancee, not wanting to be married to a blind man, left him.

Matheson struggled being alone with his ailment. He would make mistakes in his scholarship and sermons, receiving mockery from some. Eventually, his sister would come and live with him. She would aid him in his scholarship and ministry, taking him to his church every Sunday to preach to hundreds of people.

But, Matheson's sister would meet a man. And they would be engaged to be married.

On the eve of his sister's wedding, everyone had gone to the wedding...except for Matheson. He stayed behind alone. He probably was thinking of his own wedding, how he should have gotten married years ago. And he was probably wondering, "Who would take care of me now?"

It was in this isolation and pain that Matheson picked up his pen and wrote the lyrics (in under five minutes!) to this now famous worship song, "O Love That Will Not Let Me Go."

I love how this song in its four stanzas gives us four objects and how these objects lead us to Jesus,

"O Love that will not let me go"

"O Light that followest all my ways"

"O Joy that seekest me through pain"

"O Cross that liftest up my head"

And I think the climax of the song is in the third stanza,

"I trace the rainbow through the rain,
And feel the promise is not vain,
That morn shall tearless be."
